Kickbox and Pregnant with Twins

Is kickboxing ok when preggie with twins? I am so bored with the elliptical and low impact stuff - I want to get back into kickboxing a bit. Is all the punching and jabbing ok? Thanks!

Jenni,

It would really depend on how far along you are. When I was pregnant with my b/g twins, I didn't do much in the impact department during my first trimester due to fatigue and sickness. (I don't call it morning sickness, it knows no time limits!) The usual advice is to take it easy as to intensity because you don't want you temp to get too high. BUT, if you are more interested in the arm drills for some variety, I'd say to give it a try and just listen to your body. As you get further along, you will definitely be doing that alot. I gained about 50 pounds during my twin pregnancy, and that's quite an adjustment for your body to make. (Especially since the majority is jutting out over your feet!) As long as you feel ok and ease yourself into it, I think it would be good for you.

Take care & good luck!

Thank you so much for your advice!!!!
Tricia - I am about 11 weeks along and have already gained 10 pounds!! Scary stuff - and, I a cannot believe it because I have been throwing up every hour for the past 4 weeks!
I am just bored already with the elliptical (when I can even get enough strength to go the gym) I miss kickboxing. I will follow your advice and try some arm movements to see how I feel.
How did you take care of your feet during your pregnancy?

Thanks!

Jenni

Hi Jenni,

11 weeks is a rough place to be - I know the nausea can be overwhelming! You will get through it, I promise. Don't get too concerned with weight gain - it's a fact of life with twins. If it helps, I lost my pregnancy weight at delivery except for about 7 pounds. (Of course, your body will still look about 3 months along for a little while - don't let it freak you out.)

As for my feet, I elevated them as much as possible. Anytime, anywhere. That's the best way to keep the swelling down.

Any other questions, feel free to post here or email me. I'll get back as soon as I can. (As you can guess, I'm pretty busy but I try to get online every day.)

Hi Jenni:

I hope you and the twins are doing well.

I am currently 35 weeks pregnant and still teach kickboxing. I don't teach it at nearly the high impact level that I use to and my kicks have gotten a bit lower, but I am still going and continue to give my class a great workout. (It has also helped keep me sane) But anyway, as long as I listen to my body I haven't had any problems. I did have to invest in a belly belt though, that really helped!

So listen to your body and doctor and have fun.

Good luck!!

Chris
