Kettlebell kg for starter

August

Cathlete
First, I'd like to thank Michele for completely going against my wishes and posting the dang Kettlebell Way link in our Hate thread LOL.

So I've ordered the DVD now. :D

I live in Japan and it's looking like my options for kettlebells are slim pickins.

There are 4kg (8.8 pds) and the next up is 8kg (17.6 pds). x(

I've been working out with weights now for a couple years with Cathe, but quite frankly, 8kg sounds scary. :p But will 4kg be enough?

I've read the threads and saw a recommendation for if you're starting to go with 15#s.

What do you think?

Augie Doggie,

You're welcome!}( :D

How about I just send you a kettlebell. I mean, how much could it cost?

yep go with the 8kg. It sounds heavy but with the exercises it's not as tuff as you'd think. I've already moved to a 20# for most exercises and I could use 18# if I had it for the rest instead of 15#. I just started last week. I plan to get a 25# Thursday and use that for swings/lower body atleast.

The Firm is coming out with a new kit in the late summer/late fall. It looks awesome. It is on my wishlist for sure.

Jess,

That recommendation video is fantastic! Man, I wish the ones offered here had those rubber coatings... But anyway, I'm totally convinced!

I'll go for the 8kg!

Thank you very much!

May I ask another question?

How important do you think it is to get a kettlebell that has a rubber coating?

And does it make a difference if the handle is round or square?

ETA : There's a chance that the rubber coating one has a thick handle -- and would that make it difficult to use?

Rubber coating on the whole KB or just the bottom? Mine only have it on the bottom, and I believe that's just to protect the floor. I'd think a vinyl covering on the whole thing is for aesthetics.

One thing I've learned is that there are a lot of nuances to KBs (handle thickness, smoothness, etc).

The Crossfit board had a pretty lengthy thread comparing different brands.
http://board.crossfit.com/showthread.php?t=24879&highlight=let's+compare+kettlebells

I think the folks at Videofitness.com have also had some similar threads. I recall a discussion about handle thickness a little while back. You might try a search there.

I also had a link to a nice review of different brands that covered some of the square handled KBs as well. I'll try to find it.

FOUND IT!!: http://www.quantumbizweb.com/kettlebellconcepts/Downloads/Kettlebell Buyer's Guide.pdf

ETA: I have Perform Better KBs, and I've been pleased with them so far. They're not a premium brand, like Ader.

Gayle,

How very kind of you to go searching for those helpful links. Thank you very much!

I live in Tokyo and unfortunately I have so far only been able to find three brands (of which I've never heard) of kettlebells.

One is a silver one with a crescent shaped handle.

One is a black one with a rather thick-looking handle (this one also comes with a rubber coating over the entire kettlebell and handle...which makes me worry that the handle will be quite thick).

One has a square handle.

I've only been able to locate them on the internet and not much info is written there about them, so I have to guess by looking at the photo. x( When I called a sport store to inquire about kettlebells, I was asked, "what is a kettlebell?"

Again, thank you for the links. I'm going to read them and hope they'll help me figure out which one of my large selection to choose. ;)

I just have go fit brand from Target... well they weren't even discussed on the thread. oh well. I guess they are considered "cheap" but they are still pricey and seem well made? I still have my reciepts in case? I'm also wondering if its worth it to spend a bit more online and pay shipping? would it make that much of a difference? the handles seem smooth, just thin/thick enough and wide enough for using two hands. Plus they are darn cute. ;) I wish I felt settled on it. I'd hate to get one online and find I don't like it as much.

Jess, I'm having a "moment of foreign brain" and am not sure what your post is saying. Forgive me!

You mean you would advise buying a recommended one from the States off the internet and have it shipped here? (Rather than to buy one off the Japanese internet that I can't read any reviews on?)

For living in the Land of Everything Cute Japan, you'd think they'd have a better selection of bells. :) The ones online in the States are definitely much cuter!

well I dunno which ones you have available there? I guess you'd just have to play with them and see what you like.
I was talking about those threads posted about brand comparison. I just got some that are local at a store called "target". the brand is gofit. They are online too. I don't know if they ship overseas. They are cute! and seem quite cozy to hold onto. I have no complaints. but in those threads they seem to be very nit picky and I wondered if I needed to buy some expensive ones online. lol.
If you cannot have them shipped to you I'm sure the ones you have local will work fine. I'm not an expert on this though as I started KBs last week!
here are the ones I have: http://www.gofit.net/site/gofit/section/52

Hey Augie!

Like Jess, I have the "GoFit" kettlebells too. They're really great. You will probably be fine with the 8kg KB. I wouldn't worry. :)

Good luck finding one near you or online. I can't imagine trying to keep up with all the latest fitness crazes but not being in the U.S.! I hope you have a blast with your Kettlebells!

Jess,

I think you are ok with the go fit brand. I don't have them but I have ones from Dragon Door, Perform Better and Power Systems. There is a bit of a difference in the thickness of the handle but that's it. I use all 3 of them without any problems and I have small hands.

I think you made a good choice especially since you are a newbie and wanted to try them out. When I started the only place I could find them was online. What is important is that you get a great workout!

> They are cute!

The ones Anthony has in Providence and on AOS are cute, too (don't know the brand)!! :)

I don't know if that's a funky paint job, or a vinyl coating.

well I'm not "upgrading" later once my receipts expire. What I get I'll keep... I'm sure I'll continue using KBs.
well I guess since I like them... so as long as they are good I'm happy with them. :) I have no problems with the size of the handle.
