Kettlebell Exercises

RE: Rotations

This question is for you veteran kettlebellers. How do you work your kettlebell workouts in with your regular weight training? Do you do both each week? I'm lovin' kettlebells, and actually kind of dread my traditional weight workouts right now. But, I've developed quite a bit of muscle definition, and don't want to lose it. Have you found that kettlebell training gives you as much definition as traditional strength training? Just curious as to how you guys feel about your results with kettlebells vs. traditional strength training.

Thanks!

Jan

Hi Lorrie!

Yes, I am caving! Ha! You guys need to keep quiet!!!! :7 Are the DVD's you mention available in stores or only online? (I'm asking you since we have the same stores nearby.) Great idea to replace the mountain climbers with KB's! Great tip that can be used in many workouts! Thanks Lorrie. (My checkbook doesn't thank you though!!!)

Thank you Jan! I also think that form is so crucial in this type of workout because it looks like an accident waiting to happen if one's form is not good. Thanks for all your help. Truly appreciated!

Debbie - The Iron Core Way vols 1 & 2 can be found at Target. I also have Kettlebell Goddess - which is good if uninspiring. Those are great starter workouts. Once you get the form, and as a veteran exerciser, it should not take long, I strongly recommend AOS Providence. It's expensive, but so worth it. What a fabulous workout! I do like Keith Webber's Extreme Kettlebells as well - it moves fast, but it's a great cardio workout!

Jan - I've been doing strictly kettlebells for the past few weeks, but my goals are different. I want the flexibility, the core strength and the endurance that kettlebells bring. I'm not as interested in definition. I will lift traditionally again - I get too bored doing only one thing - but I can tell a difference in my long trail runs with kettlebells. I know a lot of people use kbs as an add on to weight work. If you're working legs, do some swings, and then work legs - that kind of thing.

>Here is a 10# Kettlebell I found at Walmart for
>$21.75...would it work just to start out?

I think most people would outgrow 10# quickly, especially for swings and squats, but it might even be too heavy for Turkish get-ups at first. Most recommend starting at 18# for most women (26# for strong women). You'll be amazed at how quickly you can increase your weight on swings, and using a too-light weight for this move can compromise form, because you might end up powering the weight up with the arms rather than through the hips and legs.

I started with a 15# weight from Gofit, and it was about right. I wouldn't have wanted to go any lighter, and I outgrew it for swings pretty quickly.

Christine,

I'm glad to hear that you've noticed a difference in your runs. I'm a runner also, and the BolderBoulder is coming up, so hopefully my KB training will transfer over to that!

RE: Rotations

Hi Jan,

I've been really bored with traditional weight training for a while now. I'm mixing KB work in with Olympic style weight lifting, body weight work, and a variety of cardio. Pretty much all variety, all the time. :)

I can't say that I've lost any muscle definition, but like Christine, that's not really the focus of goals.
