Kathryn, your opinion again please!

Several years ago The Firm stated that working out with weights can take 20 years off one's life, or rather, a fit 60 year old can look like a sedentary (read: flabby) 40 year old. What do you think of this? Looking at Cathe, I find it hard to believe that in 20 years she may look flabby (perhaps she may be a little less muscular?). What about one who works out hard on a regular basis, can one look better than flabby at 60? Thank you for your opinion in advance.

Maybe they mean the average person who lifts a few weights. I don't think the level of exercise that Cathe does is average, and I doubt very much whether she will ever be flabby.

I'm not Kathryn, but I'll chime in anyway - lifting weights will truly help you defy nature, and I'm pushing 60 at the speed of light so I know. I was teaching someone plyometric push-ups and explosive lunges yesterday (I'm a personal trainer in a corporate fitness center), and I was thinkin', "Damn! Pretty good for an old chick!" I don't look like a flabby 40 year old!
Ple-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-eze!!!!!
Just Do It! :)

I agree that Cathe's not going to be looking like flabby anything!

And working out with weights definitely does make ones body look more youthful(can't do much for the effects of gravity on the face, though!). I know a lot of women I see that are probably my age have a definite "matronly" look about them. That "middle-age spread" that I don't have because I work out.

Kathryn, don't laugh at my question, but following on from your comment about the effects of gravity on the face, have you ever tried facercise (eg Carol Maggio?). I've dabbled but never managed to do it regularly enough to know if it works. Just wondered (always like reading your posts!):)

I'm not laughing! I actually picked up the book (and have a video by Lindsay Wagner on facial accupressure). Unfortunately, I never use it! (And I think I finally donated the book to the library!)

You should see 84-yr-old Violet, a personal trainer and group fitness instructor at our local Y! She got certified in group fitness at age 60 and is still going strong!

I met Honeybunch at the Road Trip. Not an ounce of flab on that fit woman!

Very inspiring and thank you all for the input. I am feeling better at being middle-aged ( and that is nonsense if you work out)!
