Just starting out

:-( Hi Cathe,
I'm just starting to exercise again and I'm not sure which videos would be right for me. I've watched you on fit tv and it got me interested in doing some of the exercises that I have seen you do. Can you help? I am Type 2 Diabetic and have fibromyalgia which is chronic pain of the muscles and surrounding tissue. My doctor has said that I should exercise but not sure what would be good besides walking. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. I really like the kick, punch, and crunch that I have seen but my room is small so that's not an option for me. I've been considering the core max and I'm not sure about that either. Help.

hi and welcome,

i woudl first discuess with your docs as to what exercises would be safe for you. i think with such a painful disorder something like pilates and yoga would be good to help build strength but in a gentle matter.

but if okayed to exercise basic step/body fusion is a great workout to start out with cathe step plus this dvd gives mini add-ons for buns, arms, and abs. if its floor aerobics kick max and kick, punch, crunch are good b/c they offer low impact premixes but its still high intesnity in that you are constastly moving fast paced with little breaks.

her weight workouts would be good but start with very light weight unitl you can build up your strength. her weight workouts are great for all levels by just adjusting the weight load.

alos to go back to the first statement, cathe has two stretch dvds to relax after workouts or to add-on your rest days.as i get older i have to add more stretching and yoga to relieve tightness.

also proper eating habits will give you energy and results.

HTH!

Hi, crzy4bttrflis!
While Cathe does sometimes venture into the "Open Discussion," you're much more likely to get an answer from her if you post in the "Ask Cathe" forum.

You say you like KPC, but your room is too small? That's a pretty space-friendly workout compared to many Cathe workouts (which aren't necessarily space hogs--with the exception of some CTX and DM moves and various moves here and there in a few workouts). How small is your room? I find that a 6'deep x 8' wide space is sufficient for most Cathe workouts, but some require some modification.

What might work best for you for a start is resistance training, which doesn't take up much space, coupled with outdoor walking (and excellent way to start exercising: just buy some good, supportive walking shoes, take off out your front door, start with 10-15 minutes and gradually increase the time you spend).

Full-body workouts like Cathe's beginner/intermediate weight workout (the name of which I can't remember off-hand) would be a good start.
