Just got my flu shot...

...and my right arm is sore. When I move my arm up I feel pain, like that of a fist bearing down on a bad bruise. Which is odd, because the nurse did a fabulous job. I hardly felt a thing! I don't think I can lift weights tomorrow. Bummer. Oh well, as long as I avoid the flu. I hear it's coming early this year.

I got my flu shot today and the nurse told me she had a hard time getting the needle in my arm. I told her that was because of all the muscle I have!! I didn't feel a thing and thought that maybe she didn't get the needle in because of my rock hard muscle, (yeah right) ha ha! Anyway, later in the day it has been a little sore off and on! Hope your arm feels better and maybe you should get it checked out by the nurse!

Hi Pinky! The soreness should go away in a few days. Everyone reacts differently to the shots, but muscle soreness is very common. You can lift weights if you want to. It won't hurt the muscle. It's also OK to take Motrin or Tylenol if you want for the soreness.

Thank you ladies. I think I am reacting to this particular shot. I don't remember feeling this way last year. Hope you guys are doing better with yours.

I got mine about 3 weeks ago and it didn't hurt...ever. I got it at noon, came home and did a cardio workout. Later, I felt a slight sting, but that was all.
DH went back to work after his shot and didn't feel anything either.

They said this year that if you have any allergic reaction to eggs then you shouldn't take this vaccine as it was made from eggs.

I have no idea what it was made of last year as this is the first year we both got one.

I feel bad that you girls experienced some difficulties. On a good note, hopefully this will keep us from getting that dreaded flu.

Did any of you get a pnumonia shot as well?

Hi Pinky,
Just like you, "Enough needles"....That is what my DH said when I told him he has to get another shot.
He thought the flu shot would protect him from pneumonia.
He has very bad lungs and hence he is a susceptable to getting pneumonia. :(

Uh, I really should go get my flu shot, so should my DH. He will do it willingly, and wants to. Me, I have a problem with needles. Funny how that could possibly be being that I have to give my son insuline 3 times a day. But when it comes to me, I am terrified! I'm sure if they took my blood pressure it would be through the roof! Ha, ha! I'm such a wimp.

Two years ago, when I got my flu shot, it hurt like a bear for several days. Because of what I was wearing, I had to hike my shoulder up out of my blouse so they could get at it (this was a free flu shot that my university offers employees, and it's done in a big room). Last year, I made sure to wear something sleeveless under a sweater, and I relaxed my arm as much as possible. Hardly any discomfort afterwards at all.

Oh, and after having a very nasty tetanus shot years ago, that was sore for days, I make sure to always have the shot given in my nondominant arm (left) which gets much less action during the day and gets to rest more and is not constantly irritated.

Hey, I have not got mine yet, but I did get a tip from a nurse the last time I had blood taken that might help with the bruising...I do not really know how true it is but this is what she told me...To prevent any bad bruising do not lift anything heavy(like those 10 purses we all carry)with the needled arm for at least half an hour. All you members of the nursing profession feel free to correct me....just a thought. My husband got his last week and said the nurse did a wonderful job(he REALLY hates needles) but his arm bruised badly over the next couple of days and was very sore...Take care, Donna.

I never heard the no heavy lifting theory, but I suppose it makes sense. We hold pressure on a site where we've taken blood, or given an IM (intramuscular) shot, or had to take out an IV, and sometimes that prevents bruising. Sometimes. Everyone is different, and some people just bruise more easily than others. They could be slightly anemic, and even slightly will cause them to bruise more. Folks on anticoagulant meds ("blood thinners") will bruise VERY easily. Everyone reacts to meds differently too. The allergy to eggs someone else mentioned is true, but if a person was having an allergic reaction to the flu vaccine, they wouldn't have pain at the sight. They'd have difficulty breathing and hives, and things like that. The pain is just that person's muscle reacting to the needle stick, and will disappear in a few days. Hope this helps!

Whoa, I didn't realize there are quite a few things to take note of before getting a shot. The nurse gave me a shot on my dominant arm. My understanding was that doing so would help get the vaccine into my system more efficiently since it's the arm I move more. I'm not a medical expert; I just follow orders.:)

Actually my allergy nurse told me something similar but about my allergy shots. I get them twice a week in both arms and she told me not to lift heavy for an hour afterwards because it holds the serum in the tissue.

I've never had a flu shot and I can't remember the last time I had the flu. It was probably well over 15 years ago.

I can't remember when I last had the flu either. Being a lupian I have too many antibodies that will camaflage viruses. For years I didn't even have a cold. Now wham o. I catch everything.
But when a big virus hits as it did me this past Spring, and I have to take hig powered antibiotics, that is when I get into big trouble. Lupus will go into a flare and it can be fatal when it hits the organs.
My lupus traveled to the biggest organ, my skin this latest flare up, and also damaged another cranial nerve. I'm now blessed with ATOP (facial pain) on top of lupus flare now.
I put on a great big brave face to my friends. The macho girl who can handle any and everything.
I'm sorry....Don't mind me, I'm just in a pity party mood today. :(
Anyway....Hopefully, this shot will keep me from another virus attack.
I hope it keeps you girls safe as well.
No time for down time, as someone we know and love says. :p

Hey Wanda!

Just wanted to say a quick hello! Hi! Sorry to hear you have been down. You are probably having the same dreary weather we are. Rainy, cold and dark! I am so sick of it already and the worst is yet to come. YUCK! Was just thinking of you and there you are! Hope the rest of your week perks up. The new vids are real picker-uppers!
