just a question about manicures, pedicures, etc.

So I'm 50 years old and I've never had a manicure, pedicure, facial, or spa day. I have some neighbors who just go on and on in disbelief. Kind of starting to irritate me. They go for regular all of these procedures. Matter of fact, one of their husbands went yesterday and got a manicure, facial and a massage. Now I'm in disbelief, lol.

My mother never got any of this stuff so I guess that's why I've never done it. My sister also doesn't do it and she's made of money so that's not the reason why. Just never made that a part of who we are.

So am I weird? Behind the times? Not girly enough? What's up? Should I go try getting these things to see what I'm missing?

Thanks!

I'm 34 I don't do them either. I had a manicure once for a bday present and that's it. I just don't really have the desire. -- Well I just started getting my eyebrows waxed everynow and then does that count ;).

I do get manicures/pedicures. I love them. My hands and feet look and feel great. I used to go regularly now I just go whenever I have time. Miss doing it on a more regular basis. Try that first and see how you like it. I am not so big on facials. I used to do that also but you have to find a person that you trust, does a good job and you like. When I lived in India I did the spa day regularly but not so much here in the US. I never found a place I liked as much as the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. Now that was a treat!

You're not weird. I don't do manicures or pedicures either. I don't have the patience to sit that long. I do, however, get a massage every two to three months. I found a great massage therapist through my hair stylist. I couldn't live without him.

Well, I don't do manicures and pedicures because I am obsessive about my fingernails and toenails and prefer to do them myself. I want them to look just so, and nobody can do them like I can. My other reason for not doing them is because of the risk of infection.

I have a story about pedicures. Up until 2 months ago, I was able to say that I had never had a pedicure in my life (still haven't had a manicure), but I broke my wrist and couldn't do my own toenails for about 6 weeks. So, I check with friends and find what is considered one of the best and most reputable ladies in the area and go to her for my first pedicure. It was fine, and although she didn't do my toenails exactly like I like them, it was a good bit better than letting them go since I couldn't do them at all.

She used new utensils on me and assured me that when I came back she would use the same ones on me again. She bagged them in a little ziploc and put my name on them.

Fast forward about 2 weeks... I am still in a cast and still can't do my toenails, so I go back to her again for my toenails... figuring it would be just one more time since the cast would be off in the next few weeks. She proceeds to do my toenails again, using the utensils out of "my" baggie. Maybe it's my fault that I trusted her to be able to read, but I didn't actually look at the name on the baggie until she was almost done. I glanced down at the baggie she was using utensils out of, and it had someone else's name on it.

AARRGGG!!!

So, my worst fear was realized right that moment. She was using someone else's utensils who could possibly have given me an infection. Figures! That would only have happened to me... the one person in the world who has this fear of infection.

To make a long story shorter, I immediately told her what she was doing, and of course she was apologectic... but it was obviously too late. However, I did NOT get an infection (it has been about 2 months now), so that's good.... but the whole incident just reaffirmed my belief that I will do my own manicures and pedicures, always!!!

I won't be doing pedicures anymore....I used to regularly get them and would watch the pedicurists clean their implements and tubs/stations. However, the last time I went I got THE worst ingrown toenail infection...it was very painful and gross...it is just now healing.... I am now my own pedicurist.

I've done manicures on and off for years. I am currently in "on" mode for the last several months. I never used to get pedicures except for once in a while for special occassions/vacations/etc but have been getting them as well every time I get a manicure and I love it! I had the LCN wraps put on my fingernails so I only go get them done every 3-4 weeks and it works out perfectly for me. My hands and feet always look nice and I'm not breaking the bank or spending tons of time to make it happen. :)

That being said though, you are not wierd at all! Like I said, I've done manicures on and off for years. It's a mood I get into and it eventually fades and I quit going until the mood hits me again. It's totally a personal preference and not something you should feel you are odd for not having the desire to do!

ETA:: And thankfully I have never gotten an infection from any mani or pedi either. If I had, I am sure I would be gun shy!

I just do my own. I have the Carmol brand lotion to keep my tootsies soft and vit. e oil on my cuticle. I use No Miss I like the base coat. Sometimes I use a color or sometimes I use a pencil. Honestly, I'm just a little creeped out by people touching me.

I don't think you're weird at all. If you want to try them, see if you like them... I know for some people, they are a real treat. I have had manicures and pedicures, but I feel like I do a better job myself so I don't get them done professionally anymore. I do like getting massages, but I only spend the money on them once or twice a year. I can't really do a whole "spa day" because I just don't like to be touched by strangers that much in one day!
