Just a fun question-how do u dress up to work??

Suit, heels, pantyhouse, hair up with a clip, makeup, and pearls. I wear earrings every day and usually they are button type.

I am an Assistant Vice President at a bank.

I also HATE pantyhose and will not wear them, yuk!

I hate them, too, and high heels, and "women's suits" that have to be dry cleaned. The last time I wore a get-up like that was when I was interviewing for jobs. And the job I finally took was after I gave up on the suits/heels/nylons and just decided to go with a more casual outfit.

I'm a University professor, and we have a lot of leeway in how we dress (there was even a guy in the English department who went barefoot in class....but he also stunk to high heaven because he had a rather warped idea about conservation, as in not showeriing often). I often will wear dressier jeans (black or different colors), and on a "dressier" day, an outfit by Citiknits.

First -- Lois -- I have to say that you sound EXACTLY like me to the point I'm wondering if I've lost my mind and taken up a multiple personality named "Lois". I am a software engineer. I am also a Personal Trainer (got started a year ago). I also have a Gandhi quote for my signature. TOO similar! Where do you live? If you say Dallas, I'm gonna say "NO WAY"!

Ok...now to the question at hand: As a software engineer, I can pretty much wear whatever I want as long as none of the dirty parts are showing :) I have a wide variety of clothes depending upon how I'm feeling that day. Normally, it is jeans and a t-shirt...but occasionally I'll break out the dress pants (and then people think I'm interviewing somewhere).

Small to mid. We have 25 attorneys. A good portion of the attorneys wear jeans all week! We lowly secretary's only get to on Friday! ;-)

ETA: They are dark jeans with no fraying or anything and the sneaks are very clean and white. I didn't want you to think I could get away with grubby looking stuff. :D

Fun question! I'm a high school teacher and although we really have no dress code and it is very casual, I choose to not wear jeans. Other than that, I wear slacks, skirts, sometimes dresses. I always put on makeup, (but I've found that as I age, I need a little help :p). I don't even really mind pantyhose. How strange is that? :)

Well, I work in a law firm, so we're kind of dressed up. Almost every outfit I wear to work is in 3 pieces, i.e. a pantsuit or slacks and a sweater set, so I can deal with the vagaries of the changing office temperatures. I rarely wear skirts because I also hate pantyhose.

Comfortable shoes are really important to me. I keep several pairs of uncomfortable shoes under my desk to wear when clients come in, but most of the time I wear a simple black wedge; closed in the winter, open back in the spring, and open back and toe in the summer (along with the inevitable toe nail polish, which I can never quite find the time to apply x( )

On Fridays we dress down, but no jeans or sneakers are ever acceptable here.

I like make-up. I think it's the frustrated artist in me. I wear foundation, 3 shades of eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, blush, lipliner, lipstick and gloss every day. I like the colors and the textures.

Business casual Mon - Thu, jeans on Fridays. During the summer, and year-round at the office I travel to all the time, I can wear jeans every day. But, since I got my last promotion I've decided to dress my image up a little. If I do wear jeans during the week, I make it a very put-together look, not just jeans and a t-shirt.

I do my hair and wear makeup every day at the office. If I'm in a really big hurry in the morning, I'll just dry my hair and put it in a low ponytail. Otherwise, it's the full blow straight and curl/flat iron treatment. And I wear Bare Minerals makeup; I just love this line. It goes on fast and easy, has SPF, and washes away cleanly. Mascara is gool ol' Maybelline Great Lash waterproof.

Well I telecommute from my house two weeks and then work in the office two weeks. So when I telecommute I wear sweats mostly because I shower after my workout and then get right to work.

We have a business casual office and can only wear jeans on Friday. I wear very funky clothes to the office because basically it is the only place I go where people might see them :D One guy in my office is always joking about how "fashion forward" I am (he means dresses like freak).

When I have meetings with clients it is strictly pants suits..lots and lots of pants suits. I actually don't think I own a suit with a skirt.

yup..i have to wear the damn white apron all day long, but i wear long sleeves coz otherwisw im so cold in the lab, some of my tops i spilled bleach on the sleeve so thr r patches, sometimes i feel like dressing up but i feel so out of place, i dont aplly any makeup, only if thrs a function (not at work of course), i will check out the book, right now anything will help me, coz im not into fashion at all, i try to exfoliate once a week, other than tht i just use a sunscreen thts all, i do use a lot of products for my hair though coz its curly and i try to apply whtevr i can to make it straight. any good suggestions??

I am in a fairly creative line of work, and our entire office pretty much wears jeans unless they have to see a client. Actually, I've worn jeans on the job for past 6 years or so. But I've been on a kick lately of wanting to actually feel pretty and not slobbed out (and am proud of my Cathe-ized arms), so I've been trying to wear nicer shirts and also skirts and blouses. The only problem is that with the AC on, the office is about 50 degrees--so I wind up putting a huge dumpy sweater and a fleece from Old Navy over my nice clothing. :p

I wear clogs or sandals. Bought one pair of heels this year (been watching too much of What Not To Wear), but they just kill my feet and knees, even though they're padded and only 1.5 inches high. So I'm back to wearing clogs most of the time.

I do wear makeup--powder, lipstick and a new thing this year, eyeshadow, mascara and eyeliner. Really, I think it's from watching What Not to Wear! I wore eye makeup in my 20s, but haven't bothered with it since then until this year. AND I had my eyebrows tweezed! Someone save me!

Cool thread.

I dress very casual. Today polos shirt, white pants and flip flops (i know a little TOO much). I'm in high tech at a well known web based company. I don't have client contact in this job. I'm casual clothes M-Th ALWAYS jeans on friday. On bad weeks jeans more days. Actually wore a white jeans skirt one day.

Little makeup, lipstick, blush, little eye liner. Hair straight or ponytail.

Mon-Thurs - Business casual - ex-dh used to say he wished I would dress that way all the time because it's so "sexy". Fridays are casual jeans day. (He always hated Fridays. Too bad for him! ) :p

Job #2 (personal trainer) - unfortunately we have a uniform of black pants or shorts and a Gold's shirt that shows NOTHING! I feel like if I were to hire a trainer, I would want to see the "goods" but the uniform shows no goods at all!:( I guess I should be glad no one is scantily clad but I always feel HUGE (as in fat not muscular) at my gym anyway..... (so why am I complaining?????)

Laurie, your wardrobe sounds perfect for me. I have gotten used to the comfort of these awful scrubs. So yours sounds so much more upscale than mine & I envy you.

As far as mascara, because I am a Cosmetic Addict, I recommend Dior. Not waterproof, believe it or not. It's called DiorShow. The absolute best. I have always struggled with smudges or smears after a long day's work despite using "waterproof" mascara. I happened on the cosmetic gal at Dillards, she was wearing it, & said that the most she has to worry about is flicking a flake away after a long days work. She was not lying. I won't go back to waterproof. It makes your lashes too brittle & sparse.

But if you try that, I in return will try Lancome's concealer. I don't leave home without concealer. NEVER. Right now, I'm using Smashbox & Lola. I switch off but for no particular reason.

Unfortunately, I get to wear scrubs every day. So as boring & as bland as they get, I have gotten used to their comfort. I also have a certain appreciation for them when things "get rough."

But I have never failed to arrive with full-face make-up and styled hair. I draw the line there. That is the only way I show that I care about how I look & didn't just roll out of bed, & it individualizes me from other hospital personnel.

I love getting dressed up & used to hate jeans. The comfort of scrubs changed a lot of that, but the perfect lines from the perfect jeans really made me see that a good pair of jeans really makes a difference. You can look dressed up with a flattering pair of jeans. But I still love getting dressed up for any occasion. It uplifts my dull fashion life.

Bunbun-
What's wrong with watching too much What Not To Wear??? HUH???? ;-)

I hear you on the shoes. I always try to wear the pointy kind that Stacy recommends, but then I can't walk in them without pain. They're like little torture devices. x(

Marla: I agree. I have one pair of really nice jeans that I save for going out. Love the way they look.

Nancy: A couple of the women in my office have the cutest, most stylish heels. But every time I wear mine, my feet and legs and sometimes my knees hurt me for a week, affecting my workouts. So it's just not worth it to me--I stick to my round-toed, not very stylish clogs.

I'll stick with round=toed, comfy shoes as well (Earth Shoes, Birkenstocks, Teva sandals, some very few rounded-toed shoes with not more than a 2" heel--and usually less). I was shoe shopping yesterday, and couldn't believe how many shoes there were that don't look at all like the natural shape of a foot. Even sandals squooshed my toes uncomfortably (and unattractively as well). And those pointy-toed things? Don't even talk to me about them! Our secretary wears them, and thinks they're cute, but to me, they just look like a form of footbinding. Except for cowboy boots, I don't think MEN are ever presented with shoes that deform their feet.

Interesting question. I'm just starting my first job..retail in a department store. I just spent way too much money today on a suit. I haven't even started training yet and the guy who hired me said that if I weren't dressed in the dress code that they wouldn't even let me train.

So I figured going dressier for now is safer than not, later on I will probably be able to go a little bit more casual.
