My sister took jiu-jitsu many years ago. No wrestling involved. I remember they used weapons (!), and there was a LOT of emphasis on the mental aspects.
She did some sort of test where she faced her instructor with her eyes open, and the instructor said "I'm going to throw this ball at you now" and then she had to dodge it. The next step was that the instructor wouldn't tell her when he was going to throw the ball; then, she had to turn her back and repeat the process, figuring out when and at what part of her body he was going to throw the ball.
The advanced students did this with Chinese Stars being thrown at them.
Her boyfriend at the time got stabbed in his glute (yowsers) during one of the tests.
It sounded completely wacky to me, but there are porbably alot of differneces in each class based on instructors, and there may be many different forms of jiu-jitsu, for all I know!
Good luck,
Wendy
