Jewish "new baby" traditions/gifts?

hey all:

one of my dearest friends on the planet is pregnant with her first. She is (modern) Orthodox Jewish. I'd love to surprise her with a gift that is traditional and/or in keeping with the Jewish faith. Any suggestions from those in the know?

Wait until after the birth. Jews believe baby showers, pre-birth gifts & such are bad luck.

But it's OK if you take her out for a delicious, fattening, sinful meal to celebrate!

OMG! I'm so glad I posted, how awful to make such a cultural faux pas!! She would never let me know either, she'd feel too bad.

Sadly I can't take her out. She goes back to Israel in a few days and I won't see her before then. I'll have to take out a second mortgage in order to ship something to Jerusalem once the baby is here, but she's worth it

Hey Sparrow. You can check out judaicaspecialities.com to get some neat ideas. There are these really cool tzadaka boxes (like piggy banks) that could be a neat gift. HTH!


ETA - yes that is VERY important about not giving gifts until the baby arrives
