What gives??? I've always been a meat eater. yum!!! Cow on the grill!!! Chicken on the bone has always skeezed me out a bit, but boneless chicken is cool. The last couple times we've had meat, just the thought of it turns my stomach. I did eat 2 slices of bacon last night, and that was ok. Tonight was chicken on the grill, and I ate like 2 bites and that was it. Normally the thought ol' cheeseburger would have me salivating like Pavlov's dog, but yuck!! The other weekend it was smoked turkey legs on the grill, I skipped dinner. I get this picture of the poor legless turkey running around, or the caged up chicken, or the poor moo cow being led to its untimely death, and I can't eat it. My brain just says "no way, Jose" DH's aunt is having a pig roast in a couple weeks - and I can feel it now in my stomach - there is no way. Ugh. What happened??? DS and DH are meat eaters, and I can't completely cut off their supply, but I'm not sure I can eat it anymore.

Was there some kind of trigger?

Both of my kids and husband are meat eaters. I never really liked it but tried to eat it at one point, especially when I started weight training seriously. I felt I needed the extra protein, and cereal wasn't going to cut it. It didn't stick though, and now I'm vegan, which is the complete opposite end of the spectrum.

Ugh, I know what you mean about the pig roast. My sister had one over the summer, and the poor pig's head was on the counter in the kitchen (where I was working, naturally  ). It was not cool.

If it doesn't appeal, don't eat it. I was a vegetarian for 10 years and a vegan for two and then when I was 21 something in my brain snapped and I wanted to eat meat. But, I don't see a reason that you have to eat meat if you don't want to. Just be smart about the vegetarianism, get plenty of protein and maybe take a B12 supplement like the under the tongue dots from Trader Joe's.

What gives???

Is this a bad thing? I feel the same way! I was invited to a coworker's wedding, at which the main part of the wedding feast was a pig roast. I worked on an animal refuge for several years and got to know so many pigs personally...when I read the invitation, it was like getting sucker punched. That invite might as well have said "dog roast." I knew I couldn't go! (It's not that I think my coworker was evil or anything - I just couldn't face the prospect of a poor pig being cooked that way).

I know that's not really the exact same thing you're experiencing, but still - for me, it wasn't that meat/animal products didn't taste good to me; it was that I couldn't handle the factory-farmed badness. I was vegetarian for years, but after seeing some large-scale chicken and dairy "farms", I decided I couldn't contribute to that sort of enterprise anymore. Yucko.

Anyway...no need to force anything on your family, but there are loads of crowd-pleasing meat-free recipes that are fun and nutritious. I just made the Hot Truck Tacos recipe from the latest edition of VegNews and they were wonderful. I served them to two inveterate meat-eaters who messily devoured everything on the table.

:D
