Italy--

I'm going to Italy from the 1st-8th of March and was wondering if anyone has been there and has suggestions of fun things to do. I am on a very tight budget=college student=hostels, but if there is something incredible to do, I'm up for it.

Any fitness suggestions while I'm there would be appreciated as well.

Thanks so much!
Happy Fitness!

Hi!
When I went to Italy I made the mistake of seeing only the biggest cities and totally burning myself out. My secod time I went there I still visitied the great cities (Florence, Venice, Rome) but I also visited the smaller historic towns such as Lucca and Sienna. It is free to walk the streets! And there is nothing more enjoyable. The Italien countryside and the small medieval towns that dot it are absolutely beautiful so don't miss it. If time is an issue I would skip Milan since it is mostly a shopping/commercial city. I think the above three cities I mentioned are worth visiting for the amazing museums, churches, and architecture that they offer. The best thing is not to pressure yourself to see everything, but just do what you feel, immerse yourself in the culture, relax and have fun! Also, the nightlife is amazing, but I just have to warn you that there are tons of cons in Italy that are aimed at tourists. Use real taxi's; don't take offers from random people on the street for anything, and always beware of your belongings. Public transportation is a great and inexpensive way to navigate around Italy. Their railroad system especially (as in most of europe) is excellent and my opinion the best way to travel long distances. The bus and trolley cars are a great way to navigate within the cities. The best way to see everything, however, is to walk! The most important thing is to have FUN and be safe. Hope you have a wonderful trip, I just know you will love it.

Wow, what a question! Fun things to do in Italy... hmmmmmm.... just BEING in Italy is fun!!! I spent 6 months backpacking in Europe with my brother when we were in college. We spent a month in Italy. We stayed in hostels and ate inexpensive food on the run. Don't know where to begin... northern, central, coastal and southern Italy are so different from each other. Where will you be? It is all so wonderful. Listen to the good advice in the other post about cons, tourists etc. Try to eat fresh local cuisine... check out fares or festivals if you come across any, farmer's markets & outdoor bizarres are excellent... just explore your surroundings, be careful and have a great time! Oh and remember the lire is no more... all money in Europe has been converted to the Euro, so maybe get some info from your bank or online about the exchange rate, how to use etc

HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!!

I guess we're planning on flying into Milan, catching a train to Interlochen, Switzerland, then to Venice and back to Milan! Thanks SO much for the suggestions thus far! I REALLY appreciate it!

Have a fantastic day!

You'll LOVE Italy. We spent three weeks between the Dolomite region in northern Italy and Austria and Germany. I would strongly suggest hiking some via ferrata routes. Gorgeous! Of course, some of the routes are considered more dangerous than others and require a harness and a self-belay device with a set of locking carabiners which you use to clip into the cables. We were climbing and hiking, staying in the mountain huts or refugios. The refugios are pretty cheap and lots of people hike hut to hut routes. You can have the concierge at your hotel in Milan call ahead to reserve you a spot at a hut. The food was incredible. If you belong to the American Alpine Club, be sure to take your card because you get a discount. If you'd like, I can give you the names of the books we used and even get you some website possibilities. The cities are beautiful and fabulous, but the mountains are incredible. Please don't miss out on them!
Oh, and one more thing...take enough clothing to wear throughout the trip. There are NO, NONE, NADA, laundry mats ANYWHERE! You'll pay through the nose to have the dry cleaners wash anything.
Have a wonderful and safe trip.
