overtraining from P90X??? Or atleast feel like it???

Just curious if anyone is feeling quite as weak and out of shape as I from these workouts. I admit I have not done too many consecutive tapes in a row (so sore I couldn't), but like I said in another post, even a few days of this is making me extremely tired. I don't know if it has to do with other stuff going on in my life or what. Just wanted your feedback as far as your energy levels when doing this routine.

Thanks!

Janice

The first week of P90X especially, I was extra tired and sore, but I made sure to get in some extra sleep (about an extra hour a day and some weeks, a loooong nap in the afternoon) and to eat really well (I didn't buy into their "recovery drink," but the concept is good, and I follow my workouts with my own version of their recovery drink: a soy energy drink-chocolate!-that has vitamins and minerals and has a similar protein/carb breakdown to the recovery drink they're selling).

I didn't feel overtrained, but like I was just on the verge of it. At night, I'd go to bed feeling like I wouldn't be doing the next workout the next day (!), but by the time the workout rolled around, I was ready for it.

I'm into week 7 of the classic rotation, and I have taken of some extra days here and there (maybe once every two weeks) as I felt the need to.

How overworked you feel can definitely be tied to other things going on in your life as well. I think the cumulative effect of exercise stress and life stress adds up.

Hi Janice,

I'm doing the Classic rotation and I haven't felt over trained, but I did hurt my shoulder the first workout I did (chest and back). I had to modify for the next few weeks. Like I would only do one round instead of the 2 rounds in Chest and Back, not do chaturangas in yoga (just stayed in plank). If you are feeling over trained, I would try that for a few weeks. Just do one round or when they repeat a section just skip to the next until you build up to it. These workouts are tough and I don't think most of us are used to doing so many push ups, pull ups etc. I don't think you can go wrong with shortening some of the workouts for a few weeks. You could even do that with Plyo if that's hard for you. Just do the first round and skip the repeat. Remember, just go at your own pace, you don't have to conquer it all at once, take your time and soon you'll be stronger than you ever thought.
If I were to do it again, I'd plan only to do one round and go easy for the first 2 or 3 weeks. That would have saved me and injury (which is better now, yeah!) Also, on the ARX workout, alot of people only do so many (maybe 10-15) reps per exersice and are working thier way up to 25 reps. I also think the eating has alot to do with energy and recovery. Make sure you're eating enough and eating the right foods.

Edited to add: I have never done a series of workouts that gave me DOMS(delayed onset muscle soreness) as much as these. I'm almost in a constant state of some mild DOMS. The first few weeks were more than mild! But now my body is getting in much better shape and the DOMS is mild.

But, then again, I'm one who Looooooves that feeling.}(

Janice, what if you'd do "recovery" weeks for a while. That way you'd build up some more strength. Good luck with it.

You all have great suggestions. I did not even think of only doing one round. I think that is what is going to have to happen for chest/back. Last time I did that, my anterior delts were extremely tight for days....the kind of tightness that you question if it is really good for you, you know? I definitly think this routine can cause injury if you jump in too enthusiasitically. For all of you getting P90X....heed that warning. I am going to. And, if I am just too slammed with school and work, then I will be conservative. AND, I'll try and eat good and get good sleep. Thanks guys!

Janice

My husband has an old shoulder injury and he cannot/will not do pull-ups/chin ups.

Be careful that you don't do any permanent damage to your shoulders.

Janice, I too am constantly sore, but I think the little mini break I took with my hand actually helped, I picked up where I left off and am feeling much better. I was having a very hard time doing the ABX after the workout and somedays I separate them and twice I skipped it altogether. So we are all not perfect here. As for the ABX I do what I can. This is REALLY tough for me. I'm getting better though, but sometimes I just skip a set (I love DVD) Today I subbed ab situps on my stability ball while they were doing the "sit up touch your toes and then lift your legs while you go back down and then do a quick sit up again", I feel like those are really hard on my back and I'm not going to be ready to do them for a while. Then I skipped the legs climbers at the end, but because I did this, I made it all the way through the very last set of all 50 of those swing side to side things. I have never made it through them in the past. So you know what, if your too fatigue, just skip it and I think it will come in time. Don't feel like a weenie, we are all weenies beginning this workout and I think we'll catch up to it eventually.

"Life" definitely effects the workout!! I can tell those nights that I'm up with baby make for killer half hearted workouts the next day. When that happens I'm going to skip a day and pick up right where I left off the next day....we can call it the "P120X club".

BUT...... if we don't do this, we will never push the level up a notch. I will NEVER do pullups unless I do pullups. Also in regards to doing the recovery week to recover a bit (who said that up there????)......I'm dreading the recovery week - it looks tougher to me then the first three - can't figure out WHY they call it recovery. Have you previewed that CORE SYN DVD - I'll die, I know I will, if I haven't over trained - I will with that one!!! AND I hate Yoga, but I'll try to keep going with it, just for the sake of finishing this crazy thing. So there - I've complained. These workouts are awesome, but yes there are a few things I don't like.
