Is your office at work decorated?

Hi

I have been with this company for about two years and I have not tauched anything in my office, meaning I did not decorate it as others have. I have had some ladies telling me that my office is so dull and that I should do something about it.

I thought about putting up a picture or a shelf that I have at home but I was always afraid or I wasn't sure if this was allowed. My bosses office looks just like mine. Plus I have sooooooooooo many papers, binders, books, files that I don't have any space to put anything personal.

I guess my question is how many of you have your office decorated and does that make a difference. I know that it also reflects your personality but that's what I'm afraid of. :D If I wanted to reflect my true self I would have Sponge Bobs all over this place. J/K Well not really. I guess I just have a problem of distinguishing between the line of what's professional and whats acceptable. Does any of this make sense? Its my first job too.

My cubicle isn't nearly as decorated as other peoples but I do have a couple of pictures, a few stickers and buttons pinned to the walls and some invader zim magnets on my white board. A lot of people around here have plants and framed pictures hanging up in their cubes. I think it might be cool to get a little fish tank in here.

My office is at home, so I have no excuse and no, it's not decorated. I'm self-employed now, but even when I wasn't I never decorated my office. I think it really could make a difference (as far as atmosphere goes), but I've never taken the time or the energy to do it. I don't even have my certificates, diplomas framed.

If it's allowed, and you feel inclined, go for it. Nothing wrong with Sponge Bob. :)

No... I have a few pics of my kiddies on my bookcase, but other than that, I'm bare bones. I think if other people have pics hanging it's ok, but I'd check with your manager first.

Some people here really go insane (one woman has an afghan draped over one of the chairs in the front of her desk! I smile every time I walk by there, but I'm sure that's not the effect she's going for). I think some more original artwork looks good, personally. I hate those mass-produced posters you see everywhere.

The only "decoration" I have is a collection of odd little do-dads on a cement protrusion (looks like a shelf, but it's actually part of the original structure of the building and used to be outside. Then an addition was built, and three offices put in where there used to be a gap between two buildings. The 'shelf' has remanents of graffiti on from when it was an outside wall). Pez dispensers or various ilk, halloween toys, some French and Spanish knick-knacks, small stuffed critters (including a Quasimodo), a banana and an apple that dried up on their own and are a reminder to me of how dry the office is--they also work as a good guessing game for guests--some horse chestnuts.

On my bulletin board, I have some photos of my cats, a newpaper clipping of one of my presentations (with an actually half-way decent photo).

I don't have an office, just a cubicle thingie. I have pictures of my daughter and some things that she drew for me, but that's it. I don't really have space for anything else.

A few touches. I have a couple of enlarged photographs that I took of scenes in my father's hometown of Gloucester Massachussets, and a couple of artistic masks from Italy and North Carolina (the latter is really cool, a wooden mask cut from a small tree, bark retained), a picture of DH, and my screen saver is a photo of my youngest brother currently stationed in Iraq.

I meet with domestic assault victims and witnesses in my office on a regular basis, so frou-frou decor is a Big Not.

I feel lucky to have an office with a door at all. So many people toil away in Cubicle Hell. I feel sorry for 'em.

In my office/cubicle at work I keep it real simple with some pics of the kids and dog. Having been "downsized" from jobs before...it's a sad experience to have to pack up one's desk of "decorations" and do the walk of shame out to your car, even if you are not the only one doing it.

My rule is...It should all be able to be shoved in your purse or briefcase should you ever have to leave the same day! :)

Home is a different story... my office is a reflection of me!!

Mine is--with dust bunnies, pigeon crap (somehow they get in during the weekends--we have all kinds of holes in our roof), asbestos, mold, mildew, & pretty much every existing unhealthy particle that goes along with an 1890 building that hasn't been cleaned in at least 10 years.

I just have a couple of family pictures on my bookshelf, my diplomas hanging on the wall, and a couple of framed paintings. My office is a lot more simple than others. I was thinking of getting a plant, and putting a little glass full of candies so people can eat one when they stop by. But then I know I would just end up eating them...

Yikes! Sounds like you need an air purifier. See if your boss will spring for one. (Oreck makes a nice one that's very quiet).

I love having pics in my office. I mostly have dog pics, but I also have DH and a bulletin board with friends and their kids. People love to come in and see my dog pics. I have a really cool one in this big frame that has a white border and I stamped big black dog prints around it. I get lots of compliments on it. My assistant bought me a paw print switchplate cover to top it all off.

A little goofy probably, but I love it! It makes me happy.

I work at a gym so I don't have my own office. But I think if I had an office or cubicle, I would want to surround myself with pictures of the people that I love, things that help me relax and maybe a plant to represent life and the outdoors.

You make a good point about being professional when decorating your office. I would think you were fun-loving and playful if your office was decorated with Spongebob, but if your in the corporate world, I imagine you need to consider the impression your decorations make.

I have pictures of my dad's garden and my now-departed cat in my cubicle. I usually don't decorate my office, but when I took this job I went from a window view to a disgusting grey cubicle with an orange desktop. Blech!! I had to put up something pretty to counteract it. Strangely, I don't have a pic of my BF up. I really like to keep my home life private at work. (I know, I'm strange!)
