Is weightlifting safe during pregnancy?

Hello everyone- I am 3 months pregnant and I wanted to know if it is safe to lift weights while you are pregnant? I have the Gym style DVD's which I enjoy and I wanted to know if it is OK to lift the dumbells & the barbells? I never lift as heavy as Cathe -always lighter. If the answer is yes and it is safe toi lift weights while you are pregnant, how heavy is safe?
 
My ob said I could do anything I did before i was pregnant. With that said, your balance shifts, so please be careful! I would check with your OB, too.
 
Daniela, I'm 29.5 weeks preggo with my 3rd. I've been lifting this whole pregnancy. Once you hit you hit your 2nd trimester you shouldn't lay on your back to workout. Do your chest presses etc. on an incline. Some moves that Cathe does with your belly supported on a ball (rear delt flyes come to mind...or the "fonz" move) also become rather impossible because well, you already have a ball in front of you!:D I've been getting some pretty intense braxton-hicks contractions in the last few weeks. TOngiht I had a whopper of one that has made my belly now feel really bruised and uncomfortable. My midwife says though that it's completely normal to feel this way for a 3rd pg. I had wanted to lift tonight but my belly is so tender. I'll fit them in tomorrow to make up for it. Biggest thing is to just listen to your body. You will know when to modify. Fellow July Road Trippers can attest to the fact that I look pretty funny kickboxing and stepping at this point! :eek:

Don't look to hit new fitness goals in your pregnancy - just aim to maintain as best as possible. AND CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!:D:D
