Is Microdermabrasion a fancy name for exfoliation???

I've been reading so much about microdermabrasion, and it seems like the department store kits are basically exfoliation kits. Most of which have been available for years. I've used gritty face washes since i was in high school (80's)

Just wondering, is there something i'm missing??? I've been thinking about purchasing one for a while, i have a very uneven skin tone, and would like a nicer complexion. DH battles keratosis pilaris, and thinking this would help.

Just looking for insight ;-)

Exfoliating face washes are nothing new;-)

I certainly hope they aren't the same thing! I've used exfoliating face washes for years, but they just don't seem to be doing the trick anymore. :-( I've looked microdermabrasion up on Google a few times, and it seems like a more intense type of exfoliation (I like to think of it as a good sandblasting). Maybe some others will chip in their $.02. :D

Are you talking about the actual process or the new MD creams & sponges they are selling? They are different. With the actual wand/crystals process, that really does remove they top layer(s)? of skin. I have had this done before so I know. The only two at-home products I used was the Neutrogena peel. That left my skin feeling very soft. I liked it. I'm just not sure it's that deep. I bought another at costco with the massage sponge. That wasn't worth a flip. All it did was give me a face massage.
