Is it possible to choose baby gender?

Now first I want to say I would love a boy or a girl, I have 2 boys and one girl and love them to pieces. When DH and I are ready for another we would welcome either. But if I had a choice I would love another daughter so my daughter could have a sister. My sons already have a brother and sister and my daughter only only has brothers. Plus it would be nice to have 2 of each. But of course I would welcome any gender.

Anyway, Once I get to my goal weight-(I've lost 60 lbs and have about 50 something left to go) DH and I are going to try for one more child.

I have heard so many things about doing this or that to increase your odds of having a girl or boy.

From what I have read- to increase your odds of having a girl, you need to have sex before you ovulate so never do it after day 11 or 12 because the boy sperm don't live as long as the girl sperm so you want only the girl sperm left when you ovulate. Also, I have heard to not drink coffee and you should consume lots of dairy products daily to make the PH level of you body more succeptable to conciving a girl.

So am I deluding myself and there really is no way to predict or are there in fact things you can do to make it more likey??

Of course if I am lucky enough to have another healthy baby at all I will feel blessed.

Funny story, friend of mine had 3 girls and really wanted a boy. Of course she would have welcomed another girl but she was hoping for a boy and got pregnant a 4th time. Guess what- she had twin GIRLs!! So she has 5 girls. She could form her own dance troup now.

Hi! Here's what I've heard. From my understanding, female sperm are more numerous but don't live as long and male sperm are less numerous but are stronger and don't poop out as quickly as female sperm. I have no idea if that's medically proven but the implication is that the closer your mate can be to your egg while planting his seed, the more likely you'll have a girl.

This works well for couples in which, she has kind of a short "love canal" and he's got kind of longer anatomy with which to reach simply because, if ejaculation occurs really close to the egg to begin with, the girl sperm are more likely to fertilize the egg since they've got sheer numbers on their side and are feeling pretty fresh out of the chute at that point.

Likewise, if it takes a bit longer for the sperm gang to get to the egg, lots of the girl sperm will have died off by then and there'll be more male sperm to break down the gate by the time all the surviving sperm arrive at the threshold.

Like I said, that's just what I've heard but, without having people actually get undressed, that theory seems to have substantiated itself in my very limited observation.

Keep in mind though, no matter what you do or how y'all are built, you always have a chance of having either, just not necessarily a 50/50 chance. It would be really great to be able to give your daughter a sister, good luck on that!

By the way, congratulations on your weight loss! That's a very impressive accomplishment, I'm sure you've worked really hard to shed those 60 pounds, good job :D!

I've read the same that you have (don't know if it works). Female sperm swim slower and live longer. Male sperm swim faster but die sooner. Which, as you mentioned, means that more of the sperm that make it to the egg will be female if you have sex quite a while before you ovulate as opposed to soon before you ovulate. Lots of work taking temps and all that to really know your cycle. I guess it depends how badly you want that girl, as well as if you believe this will really work. I hope you have that girl though. I really want a girl but my instincts say I'm having a boy.

You can actually choose the sex of your baby. There is a private clinic in Virginia that specializes in this. They have a much higher rate of success for girls. (female sperm are bigger and easier to isolate.)

They take your husband's sperm, dye them and then sort by weight. You are inseminated with the female or male sperm as you wish.

Procedure is expensive and you must already have the opposite sex (for ethical reasons) or cannot have boys for medical reasons (genetic disorders carried by women which afflict men.)

Before getting pregnant with #3 I bought the book, How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby, (I think it was called that), by Dr. Shettles. I thought it would be neat to try the things he suggested to see if it worked. We tried for a girl, (we already had a little boy and our first daughter passed away), and she is now 21 months old. This pregnancy was a surprise, but looking back on when we conceived, according to the book I just knew it was going to be a boy. We found out at the u/s that it is indeed a boy.

Baby #4 - due April 23rd.
It's a boy!!!

I had a friend who had 2 boys but desperately wanted a girl, so she looked into it, and read that you had to feed your partner green peas every day, which she did, and 8 months after trying she fell pregnant, and 9 months later gave birth to a girl.

I have also heard that female sperm swim slower than male sperm, so if you want to increase your chances of a girl, have sex regularly from day 9 -12 of your cycle. By the time the female sperms have reached the fallopian tubes, the male sperms that are already there are weaker, and when the egg is released the female sperm fertilises it.......at least this is the theory :)

I do believe that there are some good books out there on the subject.

Good Luck Marci ! :7

After having two daughters, I also bought that book "How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby" as we thought we might try for a son.

Our third child is a boy and, looking back at when all three were conceived, the book was completely right. I wasn't keeping track when our fourth child (a wonderful surprise boy!) was conceived, so I'm unclear on that one. But I would really recommend the book.

Take care and have fun trying, Marci!
