Is Diet Soda bad for losing weight?

Because diet soda has no calories, I don't believe that it would negatively impact any weight loss efforts.

However, due to the amount of chemicals in diet soda, I would suggest limiting the consumption of them. There is no substitute for good, old fashioned water for not only making you feel full but for keeping you properly hydrated.

I know I can't seem to live without my diet cola at lunchtime. But I make sure to try to drink at least 64 oz. of plain water throughout the day.

Just my two cents!

I drink several diet cokes daily but I also get in about 50-60 oz of water. So far it hasn't hurt my progress at all.

I think that it is bad because of the sodium and chemicals. If you are trying to lose weight, you should try to drink lots of water instead of soda.

I don't think it will stop you from losing weight if your caloric intake is right for losing weight. But I don't believe all the chemicals and sodium are good for you either, and I do think you have the least cravings and water retention when you're eating healthy and clean(and no sodas).

I love diet sodas, though, but I try to always make sure I drink enough water, and use the sodas as something "extra", like a dessert. I try to drink a big glass of water before I pop my soda, to make sure I don't drink them for thirst. This way I don't end up consuming very much of them.

No, diet coke will NOT impede weight loss. This is coming from someone who drinks 6-8 diet cokes daily, and has managed to lose 110 lbs in the past. I did make sure that I was drinking my water, also.

People like to say that diet coke has "so many chemicals and sodium" and these will hurt your weight-loss efforts. Quite the contrary: 1 diet coke, on average, only contains 40-70 mg of sodium (you're allowed around 2,000 per day). As you can see, in the big-sodium picture, so to speak, diet cokes really do very little damage. It is those processed, microwaveable foods that contain unbelievably high amounts of sodium. For example, one of my Lean Cuisine meals has over 600 mg of sodium! Now THAT'S high.

So don't worry too much about splurging on a diet coke. If it weren't for diet drinks, I think I would go nuts! x(

I've heard that the aspartame in the diet soda will actually make you more hungry. And it does seem that I do eat more when I drink it. However, in my opinion, if you drink it and maintain your diet, you shouldn't gain weight.......But, in looking at the names of the ingredients contained in diet soda, it is a little scary.

I was wondering about this the other day.Actually, I was wondering if diet soda would help you lose weight? I don't drink much of it(maybe 2 a month) but when I drink it with a meal, I don't eat as much as normal would b/c it makes me feel full faster.
Good question.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It doesn't seem that anyone has had any problems losing weight and still enjoying their diet coke, so I will continue to enjoy mine!

I agree with drinking the extra water. If I have a diet soda, I will drink the same amount in extra water. I have wondered about the sodium, but maybe with the extra water its ok?

I have heard that the aspartame can make you hungry. I'm still not sure on this one. Many times if I'm feeling hungry I'll have water or maybe a diet coke to have soemthing different to taste so that I won't reach for something sweet. I feel like it fills me up and keeps me from completely going off the deep end (into the food).

What about the caffeine? Does anyone drink decaf? I've heard good and bad about caffeine on a diet and/or exercise program.

I've also heard that the carbonation can be a problem...maybe interfering with oxygen uptake. Anyone know anything about that?
