Ipods and MP3's HELP?!

Armywife

Ok, I feel like a dork but I have no idea what these two devices do. I know the can play music but what else and what are the likenesses and differences between the two. Please help so I can get out from under the rock I've been living and come into the 2000's. Thanks for any help. I still use my cassette walkman and portable CD players that I've had since high school and college. Bad huh!!!

I used my CD player from eons ago until August when DH gave me a iPod Nano for my birthday. Now I have a Nano and a Shuffle. The nice thing about the iPods is the ease of use. I've gotten MP3 players for the kids, but they sat in their closets after a while because they were a pain to use. There are probably MP3 players that are good as well, and probably those who know of them will pipe in, but I really do love my iPods. I got the Shuffle through work, and I now use the Shuffle for music and my Nano for iTreads and Cardio Coaches (but it is easy to select the stuff you want loaded at any given time).

So you can use an ipod for more than just music? How do you put music into it? Do you have to download from some internet site or is there a way to put music from your CD's on it? I am so lost. This sounds like something I might like to get "someday" but I don't much about this stuff. And what is the difference between an ipod and an mp3 player? Thanks for your help!

Hi Toni! MP3 players is the generic name for these devices. So, an ipod is an MP3 player. There are other brands of MP3 players, but I would say the ipods are the most popular. I have an ipod, so I can only tell you about that. Basically, I use a program called itunes. You can download it from the apple site. Then, any of the CDs that you have you can put onto your computer. I put the CD into my drive and itunes opens up and I import the music on the CD. This program inputs the songs as mp3 files (hence the name mp3 player ;)). There is another feature of itunes called the itunes store and if you want you can purchase music from there, but you don't have to. Like I said, you can just put the music you already have onto your computer. Anyway, once the music is on the computer then you can transfer it (very easily) to the ipod. Does this help?

Karin,

Thank you, thank you, thank you! "bowing down at your feet"!!! I get it now. You really cleared it up for me. So ipod is just a brand name and not a different thing totally. That sounds so cool to be able to do that and have all the different music in one place instead of having to keep changing out CD's and stuff. I really am going to have to get me one of these. Thanks so much you two for the information. Now I feel like I'm starting to get some sunshine from under this rock I've been under. Thanks a bunch!

Yippee Toni! I am glad that I could help. As I was writing my answer I was thinking it didn't make any sense, but I am glad that it did. Anyway, ipods/mp3 players are cool. My DH got me one and I was excited about it but didn't realize it's full potential. Now, if I forget it when I go to work or go on a trip I have withdraw symptoms. Also, if you do cardio machines at all, there are mp3 workouts that are very popular right now. The two I can think of are cardio coach and itrain. I use both and they are great. Just some more enabling.

That's great to know that there are mp3 workouts because I told myself I would finally start running on my treadmill and not do so much step aerobics. I just get so bored with running and I always stop and go back to just step and kickbox because I love the music and having someone to keep me motivated. I thing that would be great to have something that I can put lots of great music on intead of keep switching CD's and have something to keep me going and have a plan. Thanks so much. Maybe I can talk my husband into getting us one for Valentines/Anniversary since we usually never get each other anything and those are within a few months of each other. Thanks again! He would get good use out of it too since he is in the Army and runs a lot and stuff.

Toni, all 3 of my kids have MP3 players of some sort. DD just got a new one, and I got her old one. It's a Sansa and holds 250 songs, but htat's enough for me. I love it! I use it around the house when I'm cleaning or folding laundry and the kids are always making fun of my singing. So, I think it's a fun thing to have. BTW, one DD has a Sansa, one DD has a Creative, and DS has an IPOD. We have had to send the Creative back to the manufacturer for a new battery,(no charge as it was only 3 mos old) but othere than that both of those makes are fine.

I personally elected to skip the much over priced short life iPOD for the Sansa. I'm quite happy with it.

Christine: or whomever: What does the shuffle do and what is the price on the Ipod Nano can you still download the itunes, cardio coach etc... Should you look into Best Buy or Circuit City or are there better priced places. Geez maybe I should learn my digital camera and printer first. Naahhh, that does not have anything to do with my fitness the ipod on the other hand can be used for my treadmill workouts too.

Thank YOu

If you're planning on downloading iTrains and Cardio Coaches, I'd go with the Nano over the Shuffle. The Nano has a screen that allows you to select exactly what you want. The Shuffle does not, which is why I use it for music only. I don't care in which order the songs are played, but I DO care in which order my Cardio Coaches are played. The Nano's also hold more, and the iTrains and CC's can take up room. Play with the iTunes Software. It does have the capability to upload to the iPod, only the things you WANT, instead of everything in iTunes - so you can fine tune your iPod from day to day depending on what you want.

Does that make sense?
