IPod tech question

Worknprogress

I have the new generation 4 Nano and my daughter has the new IPod touch. Our old docking/playing stations will play our IPods but not charge them. When you plug them in they say "Charging is not supported with this accessory." So if our IPod is dead - it will not play them. We have to let them charge while connected to the computer before we can use our players again.

I did not buy cheap IPod players so I am very disappointed in this!

How can I be sure that the players/chargers out there will be compatible with our new IPods? I've looked at a few but theres nothing on the boxes (at least the ones I looked at) that state anything about compatibility.

I noticed this in reviews on Amazon. I believe Apple changed placement of different parts in the new 4G nano. I wouldn't buy any charger unless I was sure it would work, unless you can return it. Apple has some that work on their website, including this one.

The same with the docking stations/radios. This is probably one of the things Apple will change when they launch the next generation of iPods.

Good luck!

Debbie,

Apple's older iPod models allowed 3rd party products to charge the device either through firewire or USB. They were hybrid.

Apple announced to accessory manufacturers in 2005 to stop using firewire and start using pure USB in any charger / dock because they would eventually withdraw firewire support from the device. A lot of accessory manufacturers still went ahead with firewire while some switched to pure USB! funnily enough apple's own hi-fo speaker dock is incompatible with the new iPods so apple did not heed their own advice. :)

There is a lot of confusion now as there is no "compatibility" certified lst of accessories that will charge the new iPod models.

To answer your question, until Apple releases a list of accessories certified to charge the new gen of iPods, test before you buy an accessory or google charging compatibility on google to see if you get lucks on some tech forums with the info before you buy.

Meanwhile this may help you:
