Interval Kickboxing!

SRP

Cathlete
I like kickboxing, but it never seems to get my heart rate up where I want it. I was thinking that an interval routine might work, based on Cathe's typical Imax interval set up: focus on the kicking combos (instead of the punching combos) for the kickboxing, and make the interval blasts as plyometric moves: tuck jumps, power lunges, air jacks.... you know! Then at the end, for an additional calorie-burning bonus, tack on some nifty punching combos.

I like the idea.
THough I'd like to see more "sports-focused" plyo moves, like speed skaters and plyo squats and plyo jacks, and agility-based plyo moves, like "running tires," rather than "high jump" moves like tuck jumps (yuk! IMO).

When it comes to plyo moves, I like them all. I'd say, cram as many as possible in!!! }( But yes, the sports-based moves would go well with the kickboxing theme.

I'm with Shannon AND Kathryn. I like all things plyo, whether they're low to the ground like ice breakers, plyo hops and "speed skates", or whether they're high-jump oriented like tucks, vertical jumps and plie jacks. I also like fast-paced agility drills like the fast-foot-flurry found in KPC; in fact, I've incorporated many fast-foot agility drills in my aqua classes recently to great cardio and coordination effect.

I vote: I-Max 4 (traditional step-interval); Hi-Max 1 (Hi/Lo interval workout); and K-Interval 1 (kickbox interval workout).

And just when I thought (hoped?) that all the "max" title possibilities had been...maxed out!;-)

Sounds great!

I was just coming here to post this!! Great minds think alike :) I just did KP&C yesterday, and I have Kick Max and Cardio Kicks, too. I like how the drills are at the beginning of KP&C rather than at the end like Kick Max b/c it keeps my hr up the entire workout that way. I would be really fun to have the kick/punch combos done in intervals with the intensity drills. I LOVE the Imaxes, but doing them with kickboxing would bring a whole new aspect to it. It would be a ton of fun!!

I Amen A-Jocks suggestions! Fabulous....Cathe should hire you AND Jillybean to work on upcoming projects!

re. getting your heart rate up. A virtue of kickboxing is its flexibility. if your tape or program is not enought, then try the following:
- when the instructor does one punch, try doing two
- any time an arm is doing nothing, add a punch, e.g. you sidekick on beat 1, pause on beat 2, sidekick on after a sidekick
- never stand still, if the instructor is telling you something, bounce on your feet, do jumping jacks
- add hops. e.g. when you round house kick with one foot, hop up at the same time on your other foot.
- when you do knee lifts, hop on the non-lifting leg.
- if you are doing cross-punches, get in as low a horse position as you can, you can even do squats as you punch. Down for one punch, up for the next.
- on kicks, focus on getting the kick higher
good luck.
