This may be a silly question, but i am going to ask it anyway. I am going to become a group excercise instructor. I am wondering how do instructor remember there routine and how to break it down ect. I have been doing Cathe for 10+ years now and I know the routines in her videos but i am curious how it will be when i am teaching my own. is there an easy way to remember things? I know some people keep cheat sheets ect. i am going to get hooked up with an instructor and get some pointers but curious on your thoughts!

thanks

I think u just have to find what works best for u. I had other instructor friends who always brought pages of notes with them to their classes & had them laid out next to the stereo. Too distracting for me. I like being in the moment so I would first see who my participants were & then go from there. I mainly taught kickboxing, cycle & weights & after a while u get a repertoire of what works! Good luck to u!

I used to take live step classes and it seemed like my instructor had a routine and she knew how many counts it was and that she would follow the clock to make sure she didn't go too long on one thing. You can work out a step or dance routine on paper first, its like remembering a marching band sequence (if you did that in school.) If you don't choreograph it to the music and just select something fairly generic music wise you have more flexibility.

Don't be ashamed when it comes to using cheat sheets. It just shows your students you've done your homework and are serious. When I first started I would write it all out and keep it over by the stereo in case I needed to check it and I would just act like I was adjusting the music if I was worried about what my students would think. After a few classes I didn't need notes anymore because when you are teaching something you are passionate about it just somehow flows out of you! Make sure you study proper cuing (cathe is a great person to learn from.) maybe attending a group fitness instructor training would give you more confidence. Also getting your CPR certification is crucial as you want to prepared for anything. Hope that helps!
