Injury (and re-injury!) advice?

I've discovered that I consistently strain a muscle in my neck when getting a heavier barbell over my head - but I need it heavier to work the lower body effectively. Can you recommend a good exercise to help strengthen the muscles in the neck (if that's indeed what i need!)? It's a little higher than the trapezius - like the mastoid area, and it's always the same side (left).

I suggest getting a weight vest, that way you don't have to lift as much with the barbell. Then use the vest and the (lighter) barbell together.
