inhale/exhale

I don't if there's a scientific reason or not, but I find that personally, it helps me to keep the momentum out of the movement and to make sure that I am doing the exercise at the right pace (not too fast to defeat the benefits).

I think it is to prevent something called the Valsava maneuver. Some people have a tendency to hold their breath while lifting the weight, which is very dangerous and can cause you to get dizzy or pass out. By exhaling as you lift the weight you are releasing the pressure in your body at the most strenuous part of the exercise. I agree, too, that it helps me really focus on the movement and keeps the momentum out of the exercise.

Hey I have no idea about any scientific info, but I will tell you just recently I begin to make sure I was exhaling (I seem to have no problem inhaling) and it made the movements easier during the toughest parts. I am not sure if it was just b/c I was so focused on my breathing, but hey whatever helps!!

Hi Luv2tri! Beth is correct, the most specific reason is that it helps to prevent performing the "Valsalva Maneuver." The Valsalva Maneuver is when you put an effort into a forceful exhale, without actually letting air out. This creates a lot of pressure in your chest which impairs blood flow returning to the heart. It can make one light headed, dizzy and or disoriented. It is also considered potentially dangerous for people with high blood pressure.

I agree. In fact, I picked up a tip from a Kettle Ball trainer who inhales on rowiing moves (for shoulders and back). That goes against the traditional recommendations, but I find it helps to stabilize the shoulder joint and keep the chest up during the moves.

I think the Valsalva manoeuver is riskiest for those who are heafting really heavy weights (ie: the gym-going guys who get all red in the face because they are trying to lift maximum poundage, and tend to hold their breath).
