Inconsistent Ankle Pain

Has anyone ever had problems with their ankle that came and went? Sometimes in the same workout?

The other day I was doing Lowmax and got to the combo with the step sweep pivot move and could not do it on the right side because my ankle hurt even though I did pivots in the warmup with no problems. I skipped over the combo and went right to the blasts and avoided any pivoting or jumping on 1 leg type of movements and was able to finish the workout okay.

I tried pivoting last night - no problem. This morning while working out it felt "not quite right" so I avoided the pivoty, 1 legged movements again.

Anyone ever experience anything like this?

Sue

Edited to add: My shoes are fairly new (a month old) and it doesn't hurt to walk at all.

Bumping in hopes that someone has some experience with this. I know most of you are probably saying to yourself "Go to the doctor" but honestly I'd feel silly because I can walk just fine.

RE: Bumping in hopes someone can help

Well, I think you need to be more specific about where it hurts and what it feels like, as your description of the pain you're experiencing isn't too particular. I have achilles tendonitis and get a lot of twanging, pinging, and just plain throbbing in the area behind my ankle (where the foot and leg connect). It doesn't always hurt and it isn't always debilitating and seems to depend on what I'm doing and how often I'm doing it. For example, I've learned I can't step more than twice a week, or do too many plyo-type workouts in any week.

I'm undergoing treatment for it now and the doctor was actually very helpful, so I'd recommend going to a podiatrist or orthopedist if you are experiencing that kind of pain. If you don't have it treated, it only gets worse!

Marie -

First of all, thanks for responding. You are right - I should have been more specific. I've just never had a pain like this before where it feels fine one minute and painful the next so it makes it harder to nail down the symptoms.

At first I thought the pain was on the outside of my ankle but now it feels more like the Achilles. It's a sharp pain in the Achilles that may radiate outwards around the ankle and hence my confusion as to where I'm actually feeling the pain. Exercises that put too much strain on it such as Power 7s, pivots, jumping on 1 leg, etc. cause a sharp pain in the Achilles. Running, too, as I found out when I attempted it the other day, is impossible with the pain. Walking or anything that keeps my foot flat on the ground is fine. Last summer I nursed an Achilles injury with ice, rest and stretching - the stretching in particular helped the most - and now I'm afraid it's back.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of treatment plan are you on? Did you have to stop doing all forms of cardio or did you have certain activities you could still do? I've found that the hi/lo in Mission Possible is doable with only 1 small modification. I'm thinking I might be able to modify Turbo Jam, too. Since it's the dead of winter I'm limited as far as my cardio options go. I have a Nordic Track I could use but that's not the best either because you're constantly pushing off with the ball of your foot.

Any advice is appreciated!

RE: Bumping in hopes someone can help

Sue, I am dealing with multiple problems at the moment as I fell a couple of weeks ago and badly sprained my ankle. But what the doctor did was build up a foam piece that goes into the heel of my shoe. Apparently this alleviates some of the pressure from the tendon. You could probably make your own buy buying two shoe inserts (you know, those Dr. Scholl things), cutting off all parts but the heel, and taping them together. I am also on a course of anti-inflammatories for two weeks.

He did say to take it easy, avoid anything high impact for a while, and ice as needed.

However, he also said that if you let it go, you can be in a position where the ligaments deteriorate to the point where they snap! That is why I would suggest seeing a doctor, even if your pain isn't constant. Mine wasn't, either, and I only went due to the fall/sprain - not too smart!

Good luck!

Marie - The heel padding sounds like an interesting thing to try. I'll definitely take it easy and avoid high impact because snapping ligaments does NOT sound like a good thing! Scary. .

Yesterday, I did a lot of stretching of my Achilles and exercises my doctor showed me to strengthen the ligaments surrounding the ankle and that seemed to help. This morning I did a Turbo Jam (modified for low impact) and had no pain.

I'm due for my annual thyroid check so I'll be seeing my doctor soon and can ask him what I should be doing to treat and prevent further injury.

Thanks for all your help! :)
