I'm New - How Much Aerobics is Considered Too Much?

>> I read an article once that said over 6 hours a week can lead to osteoporosis. It was talking about gymnasts<<

I'm obviously not Cathe. :) Anyhow, I don't think osteoporosis is a problem with gymnasts. I had to read a lot of medical journal articles recently on the topic of the effect of gymastic training on growth and health in competitive gymnasts, and I don't recall reading anything about osteoporosis being a problem. They do have lasting problems with injuries and back problems, but not osteoporosis, at least according to the journal articles that I read. Hope that helps.

The only research that I have read about gymnasts and osteoporosis, is in association with amenorrhea (cessation of the menstrual period), which does contribute to bone loss.

Bicycling Magazine had an article a while back on bone loss in long distance cyclists. Seems that there is a loss of calcium thru all the sweating. Bone density tests were done, showing these men to have the bones of much older men. Also, cycling is not a weight bearing activity. They recommended adding exercise with some impact and/or weight lifting, calcium supplements. Very interesting article.
