I'm Giving a Presentation to Mothers of Preschoolers on...

Soosan

Cathlete
I got a lot of info from the "Getting Started with Videos" section of VF but would love some input from the "educated crowd" about:

1. What motivates you to exercise at home?

2. How has it changed your life?

3. How do you make time for exercise with babies/preschoolers at home?

4. What videos did you start with and/or what videos would you recommend to someone new to fitness (strength, cardio, flexibility)?

5. What Cathe videos would you recommend?

6. Anything else...

I'm sure the fitness level of these women varies. (Just chasing after preschoolers requires a certain level of fitness!)

Thanks!:)

RE: I'm Giving a Presentation to Mothers of Preschooler...

What motivates me to work out at home? Let's see, I have no money for a gym, nor do I have transportation, nor a babysitter. So home is the best option for me.

How has it changed your life? I am thinner, more muscular, my boys get to see me workout since I homeschool them. I know that I am doing something good for me and me alone and it is MY time!!!

How do you make time for exercise with babies/preschoolers at home? I started working out seriously at home when my youngest had just turned 3 so because we homeschool the older boys could keep the youngest busy while I worked out and we don't start school til I am done with my workout.

What videos did you start with and /or what videos would you recommend to someone new to fitness(strength, cardio, flexibility)?

Don't laugh but I started out with Richard Simmons tapes because I had alot to lose. I then went to taebo and Kathy Smith's step and Lift Weights to Lose Weight and I did some Pilates. I then found Cathe, and I have also done one of Lisa Gaylord's workout called Power Blast. For flexibility I recommend pilates, for cardio any of the above especially taebo and any of Cathe's tapes and strength I would say Cathe all the way though Kathy Smith was a nice introduction to it.

What Cathe videos would you recommend? I started out with Power Hour and Circuit Max and I got a nice taste of her. Body Max was another one of my first ones along with the PS series. You can't go wrong with a Cathe workout.

Anything else? Just make sure you are motivated to do it for YOU and nobody else!!! YOU and only you can change your body and remember that your body is God's temple and we should take care of it!!!!

Hope that helps you some!!
:) :D

RE: I'm Giving a Presentation to Mothers of Preschooler...

Don't know how educated I am:p , but I do have preschoolers and I do work out at home, so here it goes:

1. I work out at home, because to go to the gym in the evenings takes too much time away from my family. My workouts also take less time, because there is no traveling involved. Also, I do not have to have child care.

2. Well, this last pregnancy, I gained the least weight I ever have while pregnant. (Still a lot compared to most women, but I was happy). Also, the post partum weight is coming off pretty fast--about a pound a week, which is the fastest I've ever lost weight. My husband tells me I have more definition and he can feel some nice muscles under my "padding":p. Exercise is a great stress reliever for me and it has given me increased strength and energy.

3. I have 5 children, ages 9 years to 4 months and I homeschool as well. Usually in the afternoons, I nurse the baby and put him in the swing to nap, the 2 year old plays/naps in his playpen, the 4 and 6 yr old dds play quietly in their room, and the 9 yr old does his homework and/or chores and I EXERCISE:7 :7. This has worked very well for me.

4.and 5. I found Cathe last year just before I found out I was pregnant with #5 and I was not in very good shape at all. I started out with the Wedding Video, PH, MIS, MIC and IMAX 1--the last 2 I had to modify quite a bit, however, I found Cathe so likable and challenging and encouraging as an instructor, that over the course of the year I bought almost the entire catalog. I find most of her workouts easy to modify, if I need to--anyway--not the best advice here. I also have the tae bo live series, which I like, but not as much as Cathe. I don't have anything else.

I hope your presentation goes well. Keep us posted.

take care
Maggie

RE: I'm Giving a Presentation to Mothers of Preschooler...

>1. What motivates you to exercise at home?
Privacy. The total lack of some "expert" giving me unsolicited advice. The absence of someone grunting in the background to get attention.
Convenience. No waiting in line for equipment. No wiping off equipment after you -- or someone else! -- has used it.
Money. No monthly fees, no money wasted on gas to drive to a gym.
Instructors. I've had many instructors, and the really good ones have been few and far between. By working out at home, I get to choose the tapes/instructors I use. Those that don't make the cut end up on E-bay.

>2. How has it changed your life?
It has taught me to listen to my body and to never give up. Every time Cathe says, "You can do this," I actually repeat the words out loud: "I can do this." Especially when I'm lifting as heavy as I can and need two or three more reps to complete a set.

>3. How do you make time for exercise with babies/preschoolers
>at home?
I've trained my 3-year-old to occupy himself on my bed with his books and toys. It took many tough weeks of negotiations, countless tantrums and unbelievable frustration but I did it. Now that he's in jr. pre-K, I get some workout time in the afternoon.

>4. What videos did you start with and/or what videos would you
>recommend to someone new to fitness (strength, cardio,
>flexibility)?
The Pure Strength series and the Intensity Series. For flexibility, a yoga tape would help.

>5. What Cathe videos would you recommend?
PUB, PLB, the CTX series, Step Blast, Power Max, IMAX 2.

>6. Anything else...
Keep at it. Don't expect miracles. The best results aren't acquired overnight. Don't quit.:)

Good advice from others. I might add a few exercise vids that are for kids so they can be part of the "new fitness" at home. Mom has her videos and the kids have theirs! I am always amazed at the lack of fitness among preschoolers. Many can't do a sit-up or touch their toes. I know, we practice at school. I know the question is for adult info, but I think you may want to give them the kid info because the excuses to not exercise will be "blamed" on the kids. Alexis

Thanks so much for the wonderful replies, Maggie, Pinky and Alexis! I'm so glad I asked these questions here.:)

RE: I'm Giving a Presentation to Mothers of Preschooler...

You're welcome, Susan. I just want to add -- in case someone's interested -- that I trained my son to sit tight during my workouts by making sure he had his favorite books and toys at hand and by spending time with him AFTER my workouts. This assured him that Mama's exercise time is not his "enemy". This also gave him the motivation to wait for me to get done because after that would be play time.:) Getting my son to work with me like this has been harder than learning Cathe's step routines or getting myself to lift more weight. I hope this helps someone...
