I'm annoyed at my gym

They're having a weight loss contest. I find this very unfair to those of us who don't need to lose weight. Why can't they find some way to reward members who work out diligently & stick to their diets?

When I lived in VA my gym had a bench press contest. Now THAT would be fun!

Why don't you bring it up? Ask them to also have a contest like you mentioned. You could kick some major butt. }(

Are they doing this as a promotional thing b/c of it being the beginning of the New Year?

Yeah it's the old promo. I did bring it up, in fact I brought it up last year as well. I suggested the bench press contest or something of the like (personally I'd prefer a squat contest b/c that's where my strength is }( ) & the answer was "we're not that kind of gym." What the heck does that mean anyway? If they're not the kind of gym that encourages strength & discipline, what kind of gym are they?

Hi Maximus!

Try not to get too annoyed! It's not really 'unfair.'

Whilst ideally everyone should have their own burning, inner motivation to lose weight and reclaim a healthy body, we know that some people need the motivation that a contest, in which they will be held accountable publically to their stated goals, can provide in finally committing to an active and healthy lifestyle. After all, that's what the Body for life contest did and did well for so many.

In your shoes, I'd be kind of smug and feel happy that I don't need such a contest to help me reach my goals (in part because I would hate the attention of being in a contest anyway!). Your glowing health and passion for life are their own rewards, no?

Clare :)

Clare you took the words right out of my mouth (or the keys out of my fingers?), though you said it with more flair than I am capable of. Many people need the motivation to exercise, while us Catheites really don't. Ignore it. Be happy with your own accomplishments. IMO, it's not worth making a stink over it. Keep in mind why the gym is doing this. It's a New Year, everyone wants to lose weight. The gym wants to keep everyone coming (and not quitting by the end of January, as usual with about half of gym members). It's a business venture.

I see everyone's point here :) I think that it is unfair that they don't have a contest that the "fit" crowd can compete in. Then again, you are in a very good position that you don't need to be motivated by something like that and you are already fit and healthy. I guess you are definitely on the better side of the fence, although I don't feel that should preclude you from participating in a fitness event!

My husband (then BF), was in a bench press contest at the gym we were members to. He had to pay $50 to enter. That's a business venture also. Bring up your squatting contest in March when all the New Year Resolutions have died off. hahaha

Annoyed -
Be thankful that you don't need to lose weight. When you're gym says they "aren't that kind of gym" they obviously mean that their goal isn't to cater to the "muscle-head" types (no offense intended) but rather that their goal is to encourage the less self-motivated sorts to adopt a healthy new lifestyle. Hence, this contest. They are trying to engage people to begin a new lifestyle and stick with it long-term. Bench press and squat contests can be fun, but let's face it - they are more just for showing off ("Look how strong I am"). Your accomplishments are admirable and worthy of recognition, but perhaps you could take your expertise and help to motivate others achieve their goals as well.

I certainly understand your frustration but also agree that you should be tickeled pink that you don't have such a tough road ahead of you like these people do. After all, most of those people are going to fail (sad but true) because they lack the very discipline and enlightenment you have. Your reward is easily sliding into those tiny jeans!

And when I say "enlightenment", that is what I LOVE about this board. We have all seen the perks of a healthy lifestyle and it will not be compromised. My biggest peeve with other exercise boards is most of the people intending to workout but don't...."help, I need motivation to workout". That doesn't happen here. Here, it is not a question of IF or WHEN we workout...it's a question of WHICH workout and what will we wear.:D :D :D

I appreciate what you're all saying. But I still want to get something for free! x(

I would like to point out, however, that my (and most) gyms do not want to encourage members to continue coming. I've worked at a couple of gyms & had this discussion w/several owners--they don't make their money from people who actually use their memberships. They make money from people who buy memberships & DON'T use them. Sad huh?

As a matter of fact, most quality gyms DO value and encourage patronage, and a facility's value to its corporate owners can be affected by the amount of foot traffic. The more patronage the more value to the corporate; the less patronage, the more vulnerable the facility is to headquarters. The fewer people coming in the door, the less likely there will be the ability to cross-sell other services (personal training, court reservations, pro-shop, ancillary services such as tanning beds and massages, etc.).

Also, most quality gyms also encourage participation in fitness activities by offering participation contests (i.e. X number of group fitness classes attended in X number of weeks can put your name in for a prize drawing, or a prize without a drawing), and quality gyms are increasingly hooking up with managed health care plans that offer partial dues reimbursement strictly based on a minimum number of times a plan member attends the gym each month.

Maybe you've just picked the wrong gym(s), Maximus. IMHO any gym that would sponsor a weight-loss contest isn't worth belonging to.

I don't know--they've all been privately owned, except for the Y I had to join in the south, & the manager there came right out & said they liked it better when people paid for their memberships & didn't show up to put wear & tear on their machines. Same w/the guy at the community center in another city. Same w/the guy at another upscale gym near me, which I left b/c he called it "yoga central" (you can imagine how that turned me off LOL).

I guess it depends on your definition of a quality gym. Mine has an incredible variety of equipment & weights, a cardio studio, a spin studio, a boxing studio, a pilates studio & a karate studio. It's spotlessly clean. They provide towels, free daycare & actually have TVs attached to every single piece of cardio equipment. They sell some pretty nice apparel. So I would definitely say it was quality.

I think they just know they're the best game in town so only cater to potential members & not to current members, who they've already hooked. I've had my complaints about the place but I'll never leave there b/c of the choices the place provides.

Hey Maximus --

In response to your "what kind of gym are they" question: they are probably attempting to appeal to the largest number of possible customers. Unfortunately, most of the general population is more interested in "weight loss" than strength and discipline. I belong to several gyms and each one has it's own personality.

Gym #1: My favorite is a smaller gym where the owner is there every day, the regulars are there every day, and the focus is on strength and discipline. This is where I do most of my lifting. This type of gym would definitely hold a BP contest.

Gym #2: I teach at one that has been known to be a meat market-type gym. A lot of people are there just to be seen. BUT the classes are also pretty advanced and the people DO workout pretty intensely when they are actually working out :) This type of gym might hold a bikini contest.

Gym #3: A huge "family-oriented" chain that caters to the general population. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they held a weight loss contest.

So they were just being honest when they said "we're not that kind of gym". Why not look into organizing a weightlifting contest on your own? It might be fun!

Geez! Id be over the moon if people at my Gym "STOPPED" handing me flyers to join the Weight loss programmes or PTs bothering me every five minutes with their wisdom..........certainly shows me what "they" think I look like (sob sob)

Gotta laugh
