I went with Kickbox Xtreme

Cathlete
I tried it yesterday at 5:30am.I tried one of the mixes. Boy I had so much trouble. I think this is an aweesome workout once I learn it. I know others have complained about her form, but I didn't notice. What I did notice is that her cueing is not that great. I think Cathe is the best cuer out there, no one compares. So I will have to take the time to learn, but that will be fun.

For others who like this workout:
1. Any modification suggestions?
2. How long did it take you learn?
3. What other Amy Bento's do you have that you enjoy? I have Hi/Lo Xtreme, FUN FUN FUN!!

Jenn, forget the premixes for now. They may be shorter, but they all have a completed combo without the breakdown that's needed. If you need a shorter workout, just do the workout as is and stop when you need to.

I posted on another forum about Kickbox Xtreme and I'll just do a cut-n-paste of my own post:
=================================================================
I don't know why I was so determined to like KBX, but it's paid off. I really like it - a lot! It's taken some perseverance though. I don’t think Amy’s form, per se, has been the problem; but more the complexity of choreography and the pace it's presented, and sequencing. For those of you who like step workouts, I’m sure you can remember a time when there was a workout that was beyond you but looked like so much fun, you were determined to learn it. Well, it’s been like that. And the music rocks!

So this is a continuation of the thread Kathryn started about modifications. Basically I’ve removed almost all the hooks and speedbag punches. They felt either counter-intuitive or silly. I won't go too much into the jumps that I remove, because for the most part it was for impact or lack of energy. Only the jumps that felt silly or dangerous will be addressed. Okay, here’s my breakdown:

Combo 1 - as is
Interval 1 - those silly double-jumping sidekicks have got to go! Instead you can do two front jumpkicks (making it look a lot like Interval 2), or do a squat/jump roundhouse (like Powerstrike M2), or do two of your best roundhouse kicks thus keeping the impact low.

Combo 2 - A jab/cross feels better to me than a jab/hook
Interval 2 - Remember when doing those 8 switching squats to end the last squat facing forward (half-turn), so you’re ready for the sidekicks.

Combo 3 - When Amy cues “Body, body...”, I do a double-jab from the front arm, uppercut, uppercut (or jawbreaker) from the rear. This is a bit tough to wrap your mind around, because you lead with the opposite arm that Amy does. It took some time to be automatic for me.
Interval 3 - Finally, I can keep some hooks in the workout (Amy's "weave"), but those speedbags??? Ugh! Those speedbags look like I need pompons to wave. There's no way to salvage this move and look fierce. As long as we're prancing around, I wave both hands in the air like I'm doing a victory dance. Then I end the move with the two crosses Amy does. For the following 4 speedbags, 4 jabs, I make them all jabs.

Combo 4 - My jump kicks look sloppy, I'm probably tired by this time. But I noticed Kathryn's modification and will try that next time. (Taking jumps out of it, back kick after moving forward, front kick after moving back.)
Interval 4 - I'm convinced that unless your feet are stationary, you shouldn't attempt speedbag punches. So for this I do 3 jabs and a cross.

Combo 5 - Substitute a cross for the hook Amy does in the opening combination.
Interval 5 - as is!

I know I'm going to have fun with this workout. I like to keep my cardio workouts to about an hour. I can do combinations 1-4 or 3-5, and with warmup, cooldown, and stretch, it comes to 55-60 minutes (2 workouts for the price of 1!). The premixes would only be for those *very* familiar with the workout and wanting to mix it up. They all contain a chapter with the completed sequences and either omit the breakdown leading up to it or put it in afterwards. ??!!!?? That should have been better thought out because those new to the workout will be very frustrated.

I give credit to Toni, being very pregnant and filming a long cardio workout, but I think she modifies it too much. My son even commented, "What's with the girl on the left, she's barely moving!" I think the modifier should show lower impact, yet still demonstrate full range of motion.

Amy has proven to have a talant for hi/lo choreography, and she tried to apply that to kickboxing (and many of us urged her to do a kickboxing workout without knowing if she had any expertise). The moves go well with the music and she tries to incorporate moves not often done - like thrusts and blocks. She seems to take criticism well and bends over backwards to please her audience. I have no doubt if she undertakes another kickboxing workout, she'll address the issues of form and sequencing.

And have I said the music rocks!

Hope that helps!

I hope I'm not hijacking this thread here to ask:

Can you tell me where you ordered Amy Bento DVDs from? I 'd really like to try this DVD and Kelley Coffey-Meyers new Stepbox tape and don't know whether to order from Collage or Advanced Workouts.com?? Any tips for me?

Thanks,
Barb

I modify this workout quite a bit, mostly to make it more kickboxy (and to make the choreo flow smoothly using correct form).

I'll follow Diane's lead and cut and paste from a previous post of mine about this workout:

)QUOTE:) Here's what I did (I may change things up a bit when I do it again, but this worked well). Some changes were so the workout flows better USING GOOD KB FORM; others are to reduce impact, and others are just to replace moves I thought looked really silly.

1) right after the warm-up, when Amy turns to the side and does a front kick-back kick, turn front two side kicks to the same side, I sub alternating side kicks while turning to the front for the 2 side kicks.

2) when Amy does three alternating side kicks, followed by two mighty silly looking jump kicks to the same side, I substitute a side lunge/side kick for the two kicks (so: kick right-left-right squat left, kick right).

3) for 3 alternating side kicks into a jump front kick, I just keep doing alternating side kicks.

4) FOr her "body-body" punches (to what, an 8-foot tall body?) followed by an uppercut and 'jaw breaker, I do a front hook, back uppercut 2x.

5) for the knee, 2-count machine gun (does that even count as a ' machine gun" ?) followed by 3 drop kicks (I just don't like the look of those), I do a knee, 12-count machine gun, hold.

6) Any time there is a jab, rear hook, I either did a jab-hook both of the front, or a jab-cross. One could also do a jab-rear upper cut.

7) I changed the strange high punches (still fighting that 8' tall opponent, I see), I do a regular jab.

8) I do the thrust punch, kick with the kick coming off the front leg (seems smoother and more powerful that way).

9) for the down-up-down punches moving forward, followed by a jump kick, I do a non-jump back kick on the moving up (more space-friendly, and adds in some back kicks) and a non-jumping front kick on the moving back.

10) I did the " kick-walk-walk" move as an actual walk because those hoppy ' walks' Amy and crew do look mightly sillly.

11) for Amy's high-low alternating elbow strikes, I stay on the same arm and do two half-time strong rear elbow strikes.

12) For the elbow back/front double into 6 kicks, I turn the front whatever it is (what IS it supposed to be?) into a hook.

I might have made some other little tweeks, but I can't read the rest of my notes!

(Oh, does doing a ' boxer's SHUFFLE' instead of a ' boxer's SHAKE' count as a modification? LOL!)

I enjoyed the workout more than I thought I would on previewing, but that's with my changes, and with watching myself in the mirror much more than I watched Amy (though I couldn't miss some cringe-worthy and/or snicker-enducing sights, like the strangly bent-over ducks--because of Amy's height?--the wild-looking back elbow strikes, and the rabbit-punching speed bag arms.)

I skipped the core band work and the bonus bag work, because even without those two, the workout is over 70 minutes, and I felt well worked out (I think if I had followed the moves as-is, I would have been much more frustrated and felt less worked out...at least worked out ' right' ). (END OF QUOTE)

I pretty much got the moves the first time out (though some I didn't get until they were repeated several times, and I was modifying as I was working out, because I refuse to do a hook off the back arm,, or other moves that don't make sense).

I have Hi-Lo extreme as well, and though I find Amy's adding on a series of moves without warning rather annoying, I'm sure it will annoy me less the more I do it.

I have her "A-Team Bootcamp," from her first series of workouts, and really like it. She has really made improvements in her presentation from series 1 to series 2, though, and if whooping is something you find annoying, it might get on your nerves (she does quite a bit in A-TB).

Jenn-
I tried doing her premixes first because thats how I learn all of Cathe's.... What a joke! ZERO breakdowns.... then I started P90X so Amys gonna have to wait until February. I do love her stuff but since I have been doing only Cathe for almost a year I agree there is a learning curve... cuing is very different to me...almost like a split second behind. I'll get it eventually as I think she and Cathe are the only instructors I will even do any more (other than P90X which rocks!) Glad you like Amy as well... variety is good for us I think

I think Advancedworkouts.com has cheaper shipping. At this point, any pre-order discounts are over with. But if you'd like the individual instructor websites they are:

www.nrgfitness.net
and
www.coffeyfit.com

Favorite kickbox dvd right now....I love love love it. I modify nothing and I think it took me 3 times of doing it to really get it down. Now I just mess up here or there just because I only do it once a week.

I still haven't tried this (altho I love her hi/lo extreme). KCM's stepbox workout looks interesting, but the preview quality was too sucky to really get a feel for it. For $20 I might give it a shot. Is it actually out yet?

I have Kelly's Step Boxing and like it also. It's much different than Amy's. The pace is very fast, but form is near perfect. The actual cardio portion is about 30 minutes and gets the job done, She does 4 combos, each followed by a drill. The drills take less brain strain and you can really focus on power. This is all followed by an aero-tone portion where she circuits through compound moves followed by cardio (ski hops, which I substitute with power skates). I keep my weights low, using 6# dumbbells because I want to be able to do a strength workout the next day. It's easier to follow than Amy's, the moves are pretty basic. Music is good. I like Kelly's no-nonsense style.

Thank you for your modifications Diane and Kathryn. I did just that started the workout and did combos 1,2 and 3, because the premixes are FRUSTRATING if you don't know the workout. So I will do just that start from the beginning and learn my way through. I do like this dvd a lot and once I learn it it will be awesome. I also think I want the two Kelley Coffey Dvds from the 1 min I saw on collage she looks like she is fun also.

But I think Cathe will be my first love. She is the BEST!!
