I think I'm going to starve to death

Nancy,

I drank clear broth and that actually made me think I was "eating" something. It somehow seemed more substantial than juice.

Must be something weird about me, I really wasn't all that hungry, just extremely thirsty the morning of the test since I couldn't drink even water for several hours before. The lovely effects of the "special drink" that cleans out your system may have taken some of my appetite away. ;)

Kathryn, it was my first time under anesthesia also! The nurses were similarly amazed at that, and at the fact that I did not take any kind of medication. It makes you wonder what they see every day with most 40-50 year olds!

To be honest, the anesthesia thing freaked me out more than any of it. I HATED not remembering that whole time frame. The last thing I remember is the nurse putting the drug in my IV, and then my next memory is of DH talking to me in the recovery room. He told me I had been awake for about 30 minutes before I remember being awake! That completely freaked me out. He said I was talking to him, the doctor, the nurse, etc. and I have no memory whatsoever of it. I have been told that is the way this particular anesthetic works, but it didn't make me feel a bit better about that blank spot in my memory.

Sorry to go on and on, but I sure hope I don't have to go under anesthesia again any time soon. Ugghh!!

Yikes!
I wonder how long I was awake that I don't remember!
That is a freaky thing (I imagined I would start saying something odd--which I can do even not under anesthesia, LOL! Or reveal deep, dark secrets!).

Nancy, I only had nausea while I was drinking the stuff. I had to drink 3- 8 ounce glasses of something. It was tough to get it all down. Once that was over there was no nausea.

Dreaded Test

Oh maaaaan...... I have yet to schedule my 1st colonoscopy b/c I am just DREADING this whole prep thing! Wah! I'm typically a warrior w/tests, etc., but I am SO NOT wanting to do this!!

Good luck to you Nancy! I hope everything goes well for you!

I should have had my second one done in December but I have been putting it off. I dread it! I hate exposing my "netherlands" for any reason....

Not a bad experience at all

It's all over and I don't have to go back for 7 years!! Yay!!

Complik and others who have this procedure coming up: I just wanted to let you know that my experience was different from those described here. For some reason, the "prep" stuff I had to take was gentle. I took it in the early evening and it had no effect until the next morning, more than 16 hours later. The procedure itself was pleasant, even bordering on "fun" in that my anesthesiologists were great guys. The nurses were all wonderful. The only part that really sucked was the starvation, as I predicted.

Once I was out of the recovery room, this really nice nurse brought me all the graham crackers and ginger ale on ice my heart desired. (At that point, my lips were dried out and parched, and the icy drink was heaven on earth). Those graham crackers and ginger ale tasted better to me than a $500 dinner at Le Bernadin! :)

Nance, welcome to the over 50 club -- LOL!!! Your experience closely resembles my own. The anticipation was far worse than the actual experience, but at least I know what to expect the next time around. ;)

Nancy!! Wow!! Fun, you say?! LOL. J/K. I always find that the anesthetists are some of the nicest hospital folks one can possible encounter! :) Thank you SO MUCH for the update!! Ok..... ya twisted my arm now..... I will schedule  ..... when the weather is warmer. ;) I'm delighted to know that everything turned out so well for you and that you don't even have to think about it for another 7 years! :) WONDERFUL!

Yay Nancy! Glad it's over and went well!

I wonder why the discrepancy between doctors on how long between colonoscopies? Mine said if nothing was found, he does them every 10 years. Do you have a family history maybe?

Congrats on getting it done!

I know, JM. You and I had very different experiences. Actually, it's BECAUSE I have no family history that I can wait 7 years. Maybe you were younger than me when you had it done? I procrastinated for almost 3 years.

I procrastinated too Nancy! :D

I had it done last fall, just after my 52nd birthday. The doctor told me it was routine for him to do one on people with no history or problems every 10 years. He found benign polyps with my DH, and he has to go back in 5 years.

Just different doctors with different policies I guess!
