I ran "THE MILE"

My 5th graders have to do Presidential fitness testing as part of their physical education testing. Part of it is to run a mile in a certain amount of time. Well, many of them HATE running the mile.

I got sick of hearing their excuses and having absences on the day that they run it. So...I decided to run it with them. I didn't have any students absent this year and only one student came with a note from home excusing her from participating (another story...sigh). I am so proud of my students...and me!! I ran it in 9 minutes flat. Not my best time, but better than in the fall when it was 9:58.

For Presidential fitness goals, they only go up to age 18, which is a bummer. An 18 year old should run the mile in 8:15 (which I didn't make). They should make goal for older adults!

RE: I ran

Good for you! Are you a PE teacher? My kids also dread running the "evil mile". I always thought it would be more inspiring if the phys ed teacher ran the mile with the kids or even participate in the Presidential test. Kids need to know that fitness isn't limited to gym class in school....it's for adults, too!!

RE: I ran

That is great that you ran with the kids! I think that we can all be hypocrits by telling kids to do something that we don't, so you are awesome for walking the talk with them! I have only had one phys ed teacher in my life participate with us, and she was everyone's favorite. You are so cool :)

RE: I ran

That is awesome that you did that. What a great example. My kids see me working out all the time, and since i've done p90x with all the pushups and pullups, they have been using our power tower to do the same. I run too, which makes them want to run. Both of them got presidential fitness awards the past two years. My 9 yr old did something like 10 pull ups, and i think he said the min was 5 or 6. I am so proud. Kids need role models, and encouragement to keep physically fit. There is absolutely nothing negative and everything positive that can come from being fit.

Kudos to you as a great teacher!

RE: I ran

No, I am not a PE teacher, just a regular education teacher. I talked our PE teacher into walking over to the high school where there is a real track, instead of the dirt one at our school. The kids were really motivated and we had a lot of fun! A few of the other teachers jokingly told me that I make them look bad when I do this every year! I am glad that I did it. It reminded me how much fun it is to run!

RE: I ran

Hey that's awesome, almost all my PE teachers ran the mile with my classes through out the years I finished my last mile run, last September. The only thing I really hate about the mile running is in my school district you either got to pass, or you don't pass PE, and that means you don't graduate high school. I made it, but I really feel sorry for a few girls who didn't, they were so set on graduation, and going to college, and they were all straight A students other wise, but the mile has made them lose being able to graduate with their class, and now they have to be second time seniors. I guess that's another price you pay for being overweight, you get left behind.

RE: I ran

That is ridiculous! i cannot believe that graduation is dependant on running a mile! it is supposed to be about academic achievement. Very discriminatoryx( :(

RE: I ran

That DOES seem like discrimination! What does running a mile have to do with academics!?! I understand the importance of being in shape but they are two separate things and being out of shape should not hold back a smart kid from going to college! I've never heard of that!
