I like to have a martini...

Let's ALL meet at the Algonquin!!!!!

"Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone."

I remember in the Dear Abby (or was it Ann Landers?) column about the quote "Men don't make passes at girls who wear glasses" and the advice columnist (I forget which one it was) wrote in response,

"Men who don't make passes at girls who wear glasses are asses."

So there! Hee.;)

As someone who has worn glasses her whole life, I LOVE that one! :7

Me too! :D

Y'all are crackin' me up with your quotes! Very clever!

Wonderful thread - Dorothy Parker is my hero!

I love the martini quote, but also (upon hearing her doorbell ring) ``What fresh hell is this?''

One more...it's one of her darker ones, but I really like it.

Razors pain you; Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you; And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful; Nooses give;
Gas smells awful; You might as well live.

And, for all her talk about suicide, Mrs. Parker died of natural causes at the age of 74. She left her estate to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After King's assassination, her estate rolled over to the NAACP, and they still receive royalites of all Parker's publications.

I really love this one by DP

If all the girls at Wellesley were laid end to end, I wouldn't be a bit surprised.:p

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

"Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves."

"If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to."

"I've never been a millionaire but I just know I'd be darling at it."

Tee hee hee...that was fun! :7

I THINK this is a Dorothyism:

"Anyone who thinks there is good in most people hasn't met most people."

Okay, this one's a tad long, but my very favorite (I think--it's so hard to choose!) DP poem:

Frustration

If I had a shiny gun,
I could have a world of fun
Speeding bullets through the brains
Of the folk who give me pains;

Or had I some poison gas,
I could make the moments pass
Bumping off a number of
People whom I do not love.

But I have no lethal weapon-
Thus does Fate our pleasure step on!
So they still are quick and well
Who should be, by rights, in hell.

Granted, it's also dark, but I love dark humor. And I agree--everyone should own the Portable Dorothy Parker! There's a fairly new edition out (as of last spring) that my DH bought for me.
