hi everyone! new member here. anyway, i'm not sure if you've already answered this but, where did you get your certification? i'm getting ready to start an ACE class to become certified but my husband (an accomplished physical therapist and a strength and conditioning expert) thinks i should focus on the NSCA certification. Any thoughts?
carolyn.
ACE is what I have and I've always heard it was one of the best to have. BUT - when I went to apply at the Gold's Gym where I was hired, they asked if I had another cert. and I all I remember is it started with an N and had a C somewhere in it. Anyway, while I was waiting for an application, the assistant manager told me that they are getting strict and requiring everyone have that other NC-whatever that I can't remember.
It turned out that's not true YET but supposedly they're moving towards that cert. He said even 24hour Fitness was doing that. I remember something like NCSM or NCS something or NAS something but I wonder if NSCA was what it was. If that is true - then it's probably a good idea to get that one instead. I'll try to ask them what it was exactly when I go in. Even if you do go with ACE, I'm sure you could still find work. I only went to 3 gyms in one day and got this job out of it. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be for an unexperienced trainer.
NCSM is the National College of Sports Medicine. I couldn't do it because they require a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. At this point in my life, getting yet another degree is not an option.
Thanks for the reply Laura-
And congrats by the way!! Your story motivates me! I've been wanting to be a personal trainer and possibly step instructor for some time now but haven't had the confidence. I've been working out regularly for many years and within the last 7 months I've added Cathe workouts as well. But teaching someone else is something else entirely. To hear that you were offered a job so quickly with no experience makes me feel like eventually I can do it too!
Thanks again! And good luck with your job!!!
Just as an FYI - I have exercised-induced asthma and even though I have always used an inhaler, I never thought I could be a fitness instructor because I couldn't talk and breathe at the same time. Since I have been doing Cathe's workouts, although I still have to use my inhaler, I find that I now have the capability to lead a class. But I'm still waiting to find out how I did on the PT exam I took last week although I am getting certified as a spinning instructor in July.
Hey, Laura. Once again congrat's for going that extra step in your fitness. You know, I say this to you & Lois, alot of us can definitely run with the Big Dogs, but I know I don't want to be leading the pack! Good for you!!!!
Regarding certifications: If 24-hour Fitness is pushing it, it's probably NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) since 24-Hour Fitness has some sort of affiliation with them.
The fitness industry is trying to streamline it's certifying bodies since there are SO many different certifications out there. NASM is gaining more and more prestige and recognition.
