I hate cars

to repair a head gasket, the engine has to be just about pulled apart. There's incidental maintenance that they'll do when the block is off. Replacing the engine with a rebuild may be cheaper.

Afterthought added:

if the car is newer contact a dealer to see if there is a "hidden warranty", head gaskets should last a long time.

That stinks x(

But the good news is, you'll have a safe car to drive once it's taken care of. Other good news is, while you may not want to use it, you have the credit available to pay for it today.

Maybe you'll get a cool convertible for your loaner :)

Ugh, Shelly! That's totally bogus! Do you still have payments left on it? I'd get rid of it if you don't. My Civic has 112,0000 miles on it (or 179,000 km to you). It's been paid for for 3 years and it's been an excellent car. But I'm scared that the next inspection will be expensive and if that's the case, I'm getting a new car. Actually, I'm kind of hoping it will be expensive because I'm ready for a new one. I've had the Civic for 6 years.

Donna - thankfully my car is totally paid for. I won't be getting another one anytime soon as I don't want a car payment at this time.

I hate 'em too. I don't like driving them, washing them, or paying for them. Unfortunately I have to do all of that (washing - maybe twice a year, if the truck is lucky, but still, it does get done).

Man, I feel for you with that price tag! I had a sort of a surprise this spring. Thought I needed my tires balanced, since the truck was shaking. Ends up I needed FOUR new tires, one of which had big knots on it and was about ready to blow. It wasn't as bad as your situation, but four new tires at once isn't all that fun. I guess I'd better watch that from now on.
