I Hate Cardio - June 27th

Cathlete
Uggg! Argh!! I woke up late again today - no workout for me. I don't know what is wrong with me, I just need to go to sleep earlier.

What is on the schedule for everyone today?

Jana - Thanks again for all your help yesterday.

Ultra busy for me today and I am draggin for some reason. I have decided to get up at 6 am every morning (ok not that I sleep past 7 with DD), but anyway I have been setting the alarm and waking up to turn it off at 5 am every morning...I must stop doing that. DD has been getting up earlier at 6:30 so I am still only 30 mins shy of what I want to get up, but none the less I need to get better about getting up earlier.

Today is follow up day again w/Dr and hopefully we will get rehab set up today. I was soooo tired yesterday by 8 PM and my left leg was killing me. Having to put most of my weight on the left leg and then walk around all day (grocery store day) is hell.

On a better note I did do 20 mins on the bike yesterday at snail pace, but hey it was 20 mins right!

Ok I am out, I have tons of reading to do for school. I keep asking myself why in the he** am I doing this to myself!!! School is starting to become a real pain in the a**

You guys have a great day!

PS
Diane- Glad I could help. Hopefully it will work out great for you!
Kate- You totally crack me up!
Michele- Any update on the back?? Ready to get back into cardio??

Dana-We miss you!!!!

Hi all!!

I've fallen so far off the cardio bandwagon it's not funny--UGH!! I really MUST do something today. I wanted to yesterday but I had so much going on that I couldn't fit it in. I'll be so happy when summer is over and everyone goes home. No wonder I hate summer--even more than cardio if you can believe that!

I did have time to run some things over to a consignment shop yesterday. They sell used and antique furniture and decorative household items. The woman was practically drooling over my things--lol! I thought when I left there that she just might take them for herself. She felt that my stuff would sell easily and wanted to know if I had more, sooooo, I told her about that cradle. This is where it gets good!! I said I had a solid cherry, hand crafted cradle that has never been used. I mentioned that DH and I had never been able to conceive and how it would please me for some nice couple to have it. She looked at me and said, "Oh honey, just about the time you get rid of the cradle you'll get pregnant so I think you should keep it". I said that wasn't likely to happen as I am 51 and post menopausal and her chin about dropped to the floor. She seemed genuinely shocked and said she guessed I was around 31 or 32!!! Most people think I'm younger than my age but no one has ever thought I looked 20 years younger  :) :) :) . She made my day--lol!

Okay, my back. Well, it was better but now it hurts again, but not quite as bad as before. I'm starting to wonder if it's out bed. We have a sleep number bed and I may need to play around with the settings.

Diane, no matter how you slice it and dice it, you just have too much to do in a 24 hour period. You can't wake up early because you're exhausted. I feel exhausted just reading your posts sometimes. I can believe it when you say you can't slow your mind down at night and I think that's key. You are always thinking AND doing. You have to figure out how to quiet your brain.

Janjan, good luck at your appointment. 20 minutes on the bike is great!! I'm sure your doc will be pleased with that. Can you take your knee through a full range of motion yet? I hope you can start rehab soon.

Dana, August, Kate--how are you girls today?

Well, I'm going to try to squeeze in a little work out and then I need to get going. Family calls *sigh*

Michele - Wow, what a compliment!!! 20 years younger is quite a compliment indeed! Don't worry too much about being off track - I know it is really frustrating, I am feeling it too. You will get it back faster than you think.

I agree, I just need my rest sometimes. I worked late last night and didn't get home until 9 pm, so there is no way I am going to eat and then go straight to bed. Plus I am just exhausted. I wish I had sleep more on my "mental health" day. I haven't had a day to sleep in for months. I just need to sleep until noon one day and catch up.

Michele, you get off your duff and quit trying to sell your things and quit sleeping and get out that step! Okay, okay. You hate summer cuz of all the people around. Yeah, understandable. But at least you look 20 years younger than you. Very cool. BUT....you won't keep it going like that unless you pull out those boxing gloves. Now get to work!
Sorry, I am a little nuts today. Very tired. I am usually tired most of the time, but today is an extra tired day. I wanted to do Imax 2 today but did modified LowMax instead. Oh well.
I hope that knee of yours gets better. Oh, it sounds so painful and the stationary bike is so dull. I am sure you are looking forward to some different kind of cardio (oh sure).
Diane, I understand your exhaustion. I feel for you. I don't work nearly as hard as you do but I don't get restful sleep so believe me I understand what you are going through. I have heard one gets used to sleeping less but I don't believe it. If that were true, there would be alot of people who didn't need to sleep at all (well, I know there are a few, I did see the gentleman on Letterman years ago who was missing something that caused not to require sleep----not a bad idea)
Have a great day.

Yes Ma'am!!! :7

Kate, you better get some rest, young lady. Modified Lowmax is okay. At least you did something. Maybve you'll feel better tomorrow. I have trouble sleeping, too. I want to read the sleep article Diane linked to but I haven't had time.

I've been busy--not sitting around at all. I'm very proud of how nice my house is looking. I'm just cleaning up a few big tin containers that I got from Iams promotions a few years ago. Now that my doggies are gone and I only have 1 cat, I don't need all these food storage tins. I'm going to donate them to my vet's office for his kennel.

Okay, I'm off to do some stuff with the fam damily.

I have a question. Do you follow any specific diet plan? I know Dana is doing BFL and August is doing BFFM. Anyone else? I am trying to clean up my diet, but I just want something balanced and not to protein heavy. I have done protein heavy diets in the past, and while they worked very well, I didn't like how I felt and mostly didn't like consuming that much protein. I do like having a balance mix in each meal, but more like 20-30% with the protein. I mainly want to add more fruits, veggies and whole foods to the mix, but don't really know what I am supposed to be eating and what to make for meals. DH eats healthy, so not a problem as far and making meals. Any book or meal suggestions?

I don't follow a specific diet, but I do a few of the following:
I don't eat it unless I can pronounce it
Meaning I try and go for natural foods, i.e. veggies, eggs, chicken, lots of fish, almonds, fruits, etc..

I mainly cook all my meals so I know what goes into it
I like to cook and I love 30 min meals, but RRay can use a lot of not so great stuff in her cooking so I will make subs for healthier stuff

A usual day for me:
Protein pancake (August rec)
1/4 c almonds and small apple
chicken, turkey burger or tuna, with b/rice, veggies
hummus and raw veggies
small spinach salad w/lots of cut up veggies
chicken, fish or turkey, veggies and wwheat pasta w/a little mar (watch the sugar amount, must be low sugar)

If I get super hungry or want snacks, I will eat veggie chips w/hummus or homemade tortilla soup without the tortillas. I have a fab veggie soup rec, but it is really spicy.

I eat a lot and I am normally really full. I do allow myself to eat bad stuff 1-2 times a week. You have to eat the bad stuff, you can't be an angel all the time. I aim to try and have veggies w/lunch and dinner and snack. Raw veggies are really good for you too and make a great snack w/hummus.

It is a mixture of Weight Watchers, BFL, Jenny Craig and a few other diets. I also love spicy stuff so I go way spicy w alot of cooking.

Does that help any?

But wait...I cannot tell a lie....I just got this new spicy 3 pepper hummus.....and just realized I ate almost 1/2 of the container because it was soooooooooooooooooooooooo ggggggggoooooooooodddddddd....now I don't recommend doing that!!!

I think I am in love.....

Thanks Jana, that sounds exactly like what I am trying to do. It is hard at lunch because I am not at home 5 days a week and I have to go out to eat for lunch, but I usually go for a salad with a few veggies and maybe chicken on it. Salads just get so boring though. I need to add more veggies, and I definitely need to add fruit, I only get betwen 0-1 servings a day of fruit, and probably only 1-3 servings of veggies a day. I need to bring an apple or something to work for a snack, I can't do hummus until I put a mini-fridge in my office, which some people I work with have. I will definitely need one in a few months so I might as well get one now. Oh by the way, DH and I decided to start a few months earlier, in Nov instead of Feb. So 5 months away. It was his idea this morning, I am glad he is totally on board and as excited as I am. At first he was more hesistant because of money issues, but now he is excited. This new plan would mean I would be in my last trimester during the entire Houston summer, but I don't want to make decisions based on that. It obviously may not happen for several months, so why wait.

Back to the food - I think a good realistic goal for me is to eat 2 fruit servings a day. Does a glass of orange juice count, the real stuff? And then maybe an apple as a snack later in the day?

Then eat at least one veggie at lunch and then at least 2 veggies for dinner. It is really easy to get my veggies with a salad at lunch, but I usually get barely any when I don't eat a salad for lunch. Right now I only eat one veggie for dinner each night.

I also want to try tappering off carbs at the end of the day. So breakfast might be mostly carbs, lunch like a medium amount, and dinner be only a small serving of carbs with mostly veggies and a small protein. I just have a hard time finding interesting meals to make with this set up.

I love Rachel Ray too. However, her version of healthy is not always really that healthy, but it is better than most of America eats. The meals also tend to sometimes be more expensive that I like because of all of the ingredients, but sometimes they are reasonable. Her show does give me some good ideas, and is the perfect level of complexity for me. I am not a great chef, but I know how to do a few things, and her dishes don't take a huge level of skill most of the time.

Hey I am not a good chef either! In fact, I don't think I cook that great at all, but I do try.

Oh duh, I forgot....portion control. I eat all my meals off of my DD's plate, the kiddy plate. You can get them at Target or Babies R US. They are like a small kitchen plate. I like them because they have 3 parts to them, 1 for protein, 1 for veggie and 1 for carb. They work out well. That is for weight loss, you don't want to loose weight do you?

I would not go for the OJ, too much sugar unless you went to central market and got the fresh stuff. Maybe an orange in the car instead. I always did that in the morning. I do too try to tapper off the carbs at night too, but I work out 1st thing in the AM on an empty stomach and if I don't eat carbs at night, I will not have energy.

I also try to eat no later than 7:30 at night no matter what.

Salads can get soooo boring....I hear you on that one.....Are you opposed to taking your lunch to work? I know a lot of people don't like to do that. I had a friend who worked near by so we would meet in Memorial park and eat at the Beck's Prime....hheeee....it was fun.

I worked downtown for a while too and I don't know if you are near the park shops, but I would go eat there too.

PS- Yeah for November!! I got preggo in Feb and had DD in November....ohhhh...it was a HOT summer!!! I was melting this time last year. If I ever did it again, I would get preggo in September or October that way you pop that baby out before the heat really sets in!

Hi Jana - Not really trying to lose pounds, but I would probably lose 1 or 2 if I ate healthier. I do want to try and fit into some of my favorite jeans I can't fit into anymore. If I eat too healthy, I tend to drop below a healthy weight, which I don't want to do right before TTC. So I usually cheat a lot so that I stay in a good range. I don't take my lunch to work because my boss actually discourages eating at your desk. He gets really mad if you didn't go out to lunch at a restaurant with co-workers or other lawyers. He seriously asks me all the time where I went to lunch to make sure I am going. I am on the north side of downtown, in the Pennzoil tower, and there are a lot of things to eat in the tunnels and above ground over there. Today I went to Tony Mandola's for lunch for a recruiting thing. I got one of the things on the menu with a heart symbol to it showing it is a healthy option - a lump crab meat salad. It was pretty darn bland, but at least it wasn't bad for me. Then I was an idiot and got dessert, a chocolate chip cookie pie. It just looks so good, but it didn't actually taste that great. That is another big problem of mine, eating dessert all the time. It is just habit, I need a dessert after dinner and a lot of times after lunch. DH introduced that to me - it is a horrible habit now.
