I am so bummed out! I got food poisoning from my work cafeteria on Wed. I was in the middle of a PERFECT BFL week. I had not cheated once, was eating clean and was off to such a great start! On Wed I ate a salad off the salad bar and a 1/2 sand on wheat break from the sandwich bar and 2 hours later I felt like I was having baby deliver contractions x(

I am just now starting to feel better tonight. I worked out for the first time this evening since Wed morning. I am traveling on biz this weekend so I did Christi Taylor solid gold cardio in my room on my laptop. It was a BLAST!

My Dr. said I was lucky I hadn't gotten it prior since I have worked at my company for almost 4 yrs and ALWAYS eat off the salad bar. She said all it takes is one little piece of diced ham, 1 tomato, 1 cucumber etc. to give you the food poisoning.

I am bummed b/c I eat there all the time and love the convenience of having the healthy food right there. Now I am afraid to eat off the salad bar. Do you think I should give it a break for awhile or just consider it was bad luck. Has this happened to any of you?

Hi, are you sure its food poisoniong and not the stomach virus that has hit the East Coast hard (at least) over the past couple of months. Food posioning is usually due to bacteria that grow in the food and release endotoxins. Ingesting the toxins in the food will usually result in upper and lower digestive symptoms within a few hours. Since stomach viruses can also be contaminating food and you get sick by ingesting the virus, you will also get sick from eating contaminating food. Getting ill from this type of virus usually takes 24 hours but you can sick from as few as 12 hours post exposure to as much as 48 hours post exposure. You are usually recovered from both types of illness within about 24-48 hours. A more serious type of food poisoning is bacterial that release toxins in your body after ingesting contaminated food. The E.coli breakouts in kids, for example. These are serious and usually require hospitilization and antibiotic treatment.Ask your friends at work and your social friends as well as your family to see who else may have gotten sick. If it was food posioning or contaminating virus in your salad bar, there will be many others that will also have gotten sick after eating from the salad bar. You could have also gotten sick from something that was eaten the day before and are associating it with the last thing you ate...the salad bar.
There are food handling regulations that are supposed to be set in place to help manage food borne illnesses. These should prevent food poisoning. Handwashing by employess and barring employess who have digestive illness from handling food for at least several days after their illness has subsided is more difficult to regulate. Many who were sick won't tell their employess because they don't want to lose a paycheck. Also, a cafeteria/ restaraunt can do everything right and an event can still occur if contaminated food (usually virally contaminated) comes in from another vendor ex. the Hepatitis A contaminated green onions that were recently (about a year ago) sold to Chile's and others.Hope you feel better soon. I was recently sick with a stomach virus and know how you're feeling. Get well soon.

Thank you! I do know 3 other people that got sick from the salad bar the same day. There have also been other episodes. The manager told me there were numerous reportings that day. I am pretty certain that is what I had. It started to get better at almost exactly 48 hours after I ate - interesting. It wasn't until yesterday the stomach pains fully went away. They were spaced further apart and only hurt when I ate which is exactly what my doc told me would happen. I had many other symptoms (that I didn't want to share on this board) that made my doctor feel confident it was in fact food poisioning.

My work is taking it very seriously and there is a good chance the vendor could be losing their contract if issues continue. Numerous folks have gotten sick off of the egg salad as of recently. I did put a few eggs(chopped up) on my salad that day. The food manager believes it could be from that? We have had issues with them even replacing the old raisins that are hard as rocks! They always tell us they don't "want to waste them". If they are afraid to waste the raisins, it sure makes you wonder what they are doing to the more expensive food like meat! uggghhh! x(

So, anyway - I will be packing my own lunch for awhile. All I know is I am so happy the sickness is gone. I seriously thought I was not going to make it thru the first night when it happened! It was NOT fun and truly the worst stomach pain I have ever experienced. ;(

I have had food poisoning twice now, the last case was 2 years ago, and i thought i was dying. It was from (both times) turkey/chichen. The last time i had to go to hospital... it was that bad. If you weren't throwing up, whole stomach contractions, and very, very poorly, i would consider it mild, and just complain that a few of you had food posioning and that they should clean (no pun) up there act. As far as i'm aware food posioning comes mostly from meats.

I'm glad you're better now. Horrible isn't it.

I threw up so bad there was nothing left in my stomach but that yucky yellow bile stuff (tmi I know :( ) I had major contractions I felt like I was seriously having another kid. I was so sick I felt aspleep the 2nd night in my sweatshirt and sweats and couldn't even get out of bed even tho I was sweating like a madwoman!

I can so relate. I wonder if it was the salad bar or sand bar? I did have a sand the day before too off the salad bar and left overs for dinner that was an EFL meal that I didn't get sick on teh first time. I am 99% confident it was from my meal at lunch. My doc said it was too close to the lunch time not to blame it on that!!!

I am sooooo much better now. I woke up feeling normaltoday and it felt awesome!
