I can't get the cake out of the pan!

Help! I made a cake for my FIL's bday tonight and it won't come out of the pan! I made it in one of those regtangular ones and now it is STUCK.

I've tried heating the bottom, running the edges with a knife, and holding it upside down and shaking it vigorously, to no avail!! Any suggestions? I'm actually a good cook but boxed cakes are one of those "fool-proof" things that I can never quite manage...

Did you try tapping the pan on top of the counter? That usually works for me. I know it's too late now, but in the future, put a piece of parchment paper in the bottom of the pan for an absolutely fool proof method that prevents sticking.;)

Take a wide spatula and run it under the cake from the end of the pan - gradually loosening the cake by running it back and forth (basically scraping the bottom of the pan), then do the other end, then turn it upside down to get it out. The bottom isn't going to look too pretty but who see's the bottom.

I like the chainsaw idea also.

Hey Debbie!

My inlaws are wonderful. My FIL was NYPD for 35 years so I figure that's worth a cake! My only beef is, we went to dinner with them tonight and my intention was to order up tuna nuta (sushi) and edamame, he ordered crispy beef and the XL pupu platter for all of us. Gads everything was deep fried or coated in some sort of sauce!! And there was wine. Lots of wine. How does one maintain the food and alchohol boundaries without making the inlaws feel bad?
