I am SUCH AN IDIOT

Maximus

Cathlete
Last night at the gym I dropped a 25 lb plate on my foot. This is the first time in 16+ years at the gym I've ever done this. I've always been a little paranoid about it & here it's happened. Every time I see some guy in the gym wearing flip flops I think what a moron, what if he drops a weight on his foot?

So I couldn't walk on it at all last night & I was really scared it was broken. I elevated & iced it for the rest of the night. I cried all night b/c I thought I wouldn't be able to go to Cathe camp or for that matter have a decent workout for at least 6 weeks.

The good news is this morning it's stiff & sore but I can walk on it. Thank goodness! Big sigh of relief! Guess it's a good thing it was a 25 lb plate & not 45 lbs LOL. I'm thinking maybe a week or two & I'll be back to stepping. But even that week or two will be torture.

I think I'll still be able to do most of my lifting routine. The only things I'll definitely have to cut out are squats & lunges. Anyone have any substitute glute exercises for me?

OUCHIE!!! Oh Maximus, I cringed when I read that. I'm always terrified about that. The worst I've done so far is squishing my fingers in between plates when I'm changing them on the bar in a hurry.

You could do those glute raise things from Muscle Endurance. They're killer and don't require any load.

Maximus I just wanted to tell you that I am sorry you hurt yourself. I hope it is better real soon. You are not an idiot! Accidents happen and for now be happy it's not broken. I agree with Shelley on the glute raises. Feel better soon!

OUCH!! I, like Shelley, cringed when I read that. I am scared I will do that sometime too. I have pinched my fingers between plates and dropped a light weight on my foot but thank goodness that was all.

Take it easy with your foot. :)

Ouch! See that's why I stick with the lighter weight! ;-) I hope you're back to full spend real soon. It stinks when you have to modify and you really want to do more.

Maximus,

Sorry to hear about that. Glad you are o.k. I always worry about my hands getting so sweaty (yes, I seem to forget to put gloves on) and the dumbbell will fall on my head. I need to get those gloves on. I just get so anxious to workout that I seem to forget.
Anyhow, hope your feeling better.

Charlotte~~

Hey maximus,

Sorry to hear about your foot. That is one you say yikes! when reading. I am glad you can walk on it now. That is a good sign. I'm sure you will be ready for that road trip.

Hope it gets well soon!

So sorry to hear of this, I know for me when my feet hurt, everything hurts. Here's to a speedy recovery!!

Jeanette

Thanks for your sympathy guys. I love this forum! :) :) :) :) :)

I don't have ME so describe glute raises to me. I'm guessing something on my hands & knees, raising my legs? I'll have to figure out how to use weights w/this. Or just do lots & lots of reps.

OMG!!! Are you okay?? You better take it light! Just do your pilates;-)

Aila

edited to add...Do you have some ankle weights?? You can do some floor exercises for your glutes w/them.

Hey Maximus!

Sorry to hear about the injury! That can be so frustrating, but can happen so easily. I think that you will be fine by the roadtrip, since you can walk on it this morning.

That's funny because the first substitute glute exercise I thought of was also the glute raises in Muscle Endurance. I would think that any of the floor work in Legs and Glutes (especially those glute raises on the ball), GS Legs, or Pure Strength would fit the bill for glute exercises.

Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon

Glute raises from ME - right leg forward, left leg back and straight. The knee of your front leg should be at a 90 degree angle. Lean forward over your front leg, and straighten your front leg, keeping your back leg straight. This will essentially lift your butt up in the air and you should feel it right up the back of the leg into the glute. I think in ME she does about 24 per leg. Is that vaguely even clear?

Maximus you're not an idiot and accidents do happen.

Once I was doing chest flyes with ??30-35?? lbs. and I did not see the 75#'s next to me on the floor so when I went to put the weights down, my pinky got sandwiched in between the 30 & 75 and did it hurt like hell. I was in SOOOO much pain nothing could come out of my mouth. One guy kept looking at me and finally the pain came out b/c I screamed at him, "I SMASHED MY FINGER". He looked away. It was so badly smashed in two weeks it look like the cartoons when their toes get hit. Eventually the entire nail came off.

Take care of that foot, let it heal properly before you do anything b/c I know what it's like to be out of commission.
Glutes raises would be very safe.

Edited to say: The idiot was me b/c soon after the pain came out verbally, I started laughing.

So Shelley, I have to be standing? I don't think I can do any standing leg exercises. I know I can do extensions & curls, so I'll probably just increase my sets. But I'm at a loss when it comes to glutes. Also calves, but I don't see how there's any solution to that since pretty much all calve exercises involve flexing the foot.

Oh, right. Well, that just sucks:-(

There is some really good floor work in the Tae Bo advanced workout that is kneeling and it works your glutes pretty hard. I could probably explain those to you. PM me and lemme know.:)

OUCH!
I've never dropped a plate on my foot, but I have stubbed my toes on weights when I'm not working out.

I'm sending some healing energy to your foot. Hope you're back to 100% soon!

For glutes, I find that some floor work is very effective. Donkey kicks with an ankle weight on (think of the movement you'd do if you were on a butt blaster machine at the gym). There are many variations on the move, and they all seem to hit the muscle in a slightly different way: bent leg, bent to straight leg, crossing the knee over the other knee at the bottom, pulsing moves, 3-down/1-up counts (and a variety of other counts). And best of all, absolutely no stress on the foot!

YOW, Maximus! I'm sorry to hear about your weight mishap. Holy smokes, that had to hurt. You're not an idiot - it happens to everyone. Are you bruised? My daughter had a bench fall on her foot and it was bruised for days.

Hope your foot feels better soon!

Angie

Ouch is right! I can't begin to tell you all the times I almost dropped a plate on my foot and it didn't happen (good reflexes perhaps?). It is scary to hear that it happened to you. I'm glad you can walk. Take it easy for a couple of days. By the way, ME is a great workout. Take care.
