I come from Puerto Rico and we usually say hello and goodbye to our friends with a kiss on the cheek. Male never kiss males, but there is nothing wrong with male and female kissing each other on the cheek as long as they are friends or family. Acquaintances sometimes do it, sometimes don't. If you just met that person for the first time, a handshake is more appropriate. That's how it is in PR.

An ex-boyfriend of mine from high school stopped over my mom's yesterday when I was there to visit for a little while. We talk on the phone on occasion but I hadn't seen him in years so he finally came by. I gave him a hug hello and he seemed a bit uncomfortable with it. I found it odd....I spent 8 years of my life with this guy so I didn't think anything of the hug myself...but then again, he doesn't come from a huggy/kissy family like I do, we haven't dated since the mid 90's and do we see eachother on any kind of remotely regular basis.

I guess it takes all kinds to make the world go 'round, right? :)

It depends, but if I'm in a situation that requires ANY amount of touching in that way (i.e., a handshake or a hug or a kiss), much of the time I'll do the double cheek kiss or hug. Plenty of people who "only" get a handshake, but those are generally either people I really don't know at all, or not much at all, or they are colder in general.

I'm Puerto Rican so ditto to everything Mariela said!

It's pretty normal to kiss everybody on the cheek here in PR although I'm not much of a kisser myself. I'd rather do the wave and hello which laura somehow left out...:7

My close friends get hugged all the time. Randomly.:) In business situations, it's always a handshake, even with the guy who calls me Honeybun:p

People I'm just meeting get a handshake too. Unless, of course, they're ex-girlfriends of my SO. Then they get the Level 7 Death Stare.}(

I'm not very kissy at all.
