HR/Recruiters - advice on landing a new job?

Hello. Currently I work as an administrative assistant for a construction company; I currently hate my job. In fact, when I think about it, I've hated it for quite some time. (I've been with the company for 7 1/2 years.)

I would love to do a job that’s a bit more creative in nature (writing, editing, marketing, advertising, etc.), but my employment history is comprised of things quite contrary to creativity (clerical, retail, or administrative). I have a 2-year AA degree. I'd really like to get a 4-year degree in something that would help me secure a job within a creative field, but right now I simply cannot afford to go to school.

Friends have suggested the following:

1. Get an administrative job at a university that offers tuition reimbursement, thus, getting paid to basically do what I do now with the bonus of working towards a 4-year degree (for free).

2. Get an administrative job at a creative-based company (publishing house, advertising firm, etc.) and attempt to work my way into something more creative/enjoyable.

Advice?

Thank you.
:)

Jillybean,

I agree with the first suggestion that your friends have given you. I have a friend who does recruiting and employement placement services. He has done this for the past several years and has even recruited for colleges (The University of Phoenix which is a specialty school that offers online degrees....http://www.phoenix.edu/).

He has had many people in your same situation and finds that placement within a university setting to be ideal. You can work and make a living and also enjoy the benefits of reduced or included tuition as a part of your employment package. Of course, every school will be unique as to what they offer their employees but this is a good option to look into.

Of course, the second option is good as well. Many companies encourage employees to work their way up! If you have a desire to do something more creative, starting on the administrative side will give you a "lay of the land" view of that particular company. According to my friend (the recruiter) many companies prefer to promote from within first before looking for outside candidates.

Good luck with what you decide!! :D
