How to protect carpet while stepping

I workout in the living room. Because the step has a rubber top, it gets on my shoes and then comes off on the carpet. The carpet is fairly light colored and it makes it look terrible. Is there anything I can put on top of my carpet while I workout, which I can roll up and put away when I am done? I know there are puzzle mats and such but my impression is that those go over flooring and are made to stay put.

Suggestions?

someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I thought there are people that do take up their puzzle mats when done working out.

Yes, I use a puzzle mat in my family room so I pick it up after each use. They can be put together and pulled apart very quickly and easily.

I use a berber area rug. It's a little bulky, but if you have room you could roll it up. I leave mine out as the kids play and eat on it too! :)

Yes,
Berber is really good.
I have to say that I am thankful to the sales lady for suggesting I put berber carpet in my basement when I bought my new townhome. At the time I really didn't know what berber was.
In my old townhouse you could definately tell where I exercise. The carpet got extremely worn in that area.

I would like berber if it weren't for my dog who happens to pull it up, so I have runs in it now, all over the place.:( So, unfortunately I will never buy berber again as long as we have this 86 lb yellow lab.
BUT, the carpet roll up idea is a good one!

Has anyone tried the rubber mats that are used under treadmills? I know they come in different sizes and the thin ones roll up easliy. I was thinking of trying some.

For those of you with puzzle mats, and pick them up after working out, do they stay together while you are working out? I heard that on the more agressive moves, they can come apart.
