how much water do you drink?

Hi

I really wanted to check in with fellow Catheites about how much water you'll consume in a day.

I work with a nutritionist as I am trying to bring my eating disorder under control and she thinks I am drinking way too much. I normally drink my water from a 1.5 litre bottle which I fill up 5 times a days. So I guess I am drinking approx 6 - 8 litres a day. It goes down a bit in winter but not too much. I also need to have frequent loo breaks - at least more than the average person.

My nutritionist says 2 -3 litres is adequate for an active person. I was really very surprised. I normally need 1.5 litres just to recover from IMAX 3! I don't think 2 -3 litres would work for me. Any input from you guys would be great.

Also I would love to know how much fat you guys eat. I don't add any fat to my diet and I know that is kind of extreme. But my nutritionist wants me to eat 2-3 servings with lunch and dinner. One serving of fat is approx. one tablespoon of nuts or one teaspoon of oil. Is that about average? Its funny, I pay all that money for a nutritionist but at the end of the day, I seem to trust the advice I get from here more.

Wow, you can drink a lot of water. I think that I drink, on average, 40 ounces of water a day. That may go up depending exercise, weather, etc.
But I'm assuming that your body knows how much water it needs.

I, like you, used to be "fat-phobic" for many years. I've since gotten over that. I now happily add olive oil, peanut butter, a small amount of nuts, dark chocolate, and avacados to my diet just to name a few.

I started adding fat gradually however because of course I was mistakenly convinced that I would gain tons of weight if I cooked with olive or canola oil or ate fat of any kind. I have actually learned and put to practice the idea that I can eat anything I want in moderation. It seems like such a simple and cliche idea but it is so true.(And no, I did not gain weight, I actually lost some)

Good luck with your diet and I sincerely hope you get your eating disorder under control. It looks like you've taken some huge steps towards recovery!!!

I should know litres better, but I just can't do the conversion to gallons or glasses!

My mathematical inadequecies aside, I've read that you should drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day (ie: if you weigh 120 pounds, then 60 ounces, close to the 8, 8 ounce glasses per day suggestion).

BUT, if you eat a lot of watery foods (soups, raw veggies, raw fruits) your body is getting water from them as well.

I good general rule of thumb is to drink enough so that your urine is very light (like watered-down lemonade) or even clear. Though that's not always 100% accurate either. If you take multivitamins that contain certain B vitamins, your urine will be darker yellow (mine is when I take certain multis, but not with others).

I drink about 64 - 80 ounces depending on what I'm doing that day. Probably 64 is about the norm for me. As far as fat, I'm eating about what you're nutritionist is suggesting if not just a tad more. I usually have nuts with breakfast and dinner or as an afternoon snack and some kind of oil with my salad at lunch.

For water, 100-125 ounces per day. I've done this for many years and drinking less than 100 oz leaves me thirsty!

For fats, I try to eat "good" fats like olive oil, and stay away from trans fats. I do eat peanut butter, but am allergic to all other nuts so I can't eat those:(

Last I tracked it, I drink at minimum a gallon a day (64 oz?). Probably more on hot days or when I am running around nonstop all day. I find that if I drink less, I get thirsty and tired. Have been drinking this much for years, so I think my body is used to it and also needs it.

Thanks for your responses. I am obviously drinking far too much and that would explain all the bloating I experience. If my conversion is correct then I think you'll are drinking anywhere between 2 - 3 litres which is half of what I drink. I think I probably should go down to 4 and then see how I feel. Its also time to start eating some fat! Once again thanks for replying.
