How much rest?

Hi Everyone,

Just curious as to how much rest you put between weight training workouts - say a total body one. Do you think two days is enough? I'm not having any significant DOMS.

Thanks in advance!

For me it depends on the DOMS. I make it a rule to not work something out while the muscle is still in growth or slow recovery. Sometimes it takes my triceps, for example, 5 days to feel normal again. (I'll often look around on youtube for a dynamic flexibility routine then) Maybe that's just me, I dunno!
As Justine points out, there are programs where you work TB muscles three times per week so I am sure it's fine and not harmful or anything. It's just individual. That type of program would not work for me personally. Which is why I prefer splits usually.

Hi Reese,

I think you need to listen to your body and not work out a muscle again until it feels ok. Also, the older I get, the longer it takes my muscles to recover. This is one reason I don't do many rotations. I've had overuse injuries enough times now to realize I need more rest after lifting heavy-especially for my upper body. I'm guessing my lower body never really reaches failure so I can usually work it again sooner. You may need to put two days between total body workouts sometimes and other times only one day.

If you train your whole body, lifting weights via a dvd or your own free weights plan, and you don't feel doms or any muscle tightness/fatigue the next day, then you are good to go. I don't care what the literature suggests on this. I'm not saying anyone should be lifting the next day, but if I don't feel a concurrent result the following 24-48 hours (and you should know the different ways the body responds to lifting) I wasn't putting too much into the program. So there really isn't that much to repair. Your question though, is more complicated if you are a beginner, and then it goes from there such as: your age, average nightly sleep, diet, stress and nutrient timing.
