How long to get back in shape?

I know this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it on a search.

I've been out of it for about four months for several reasons (excuses, really), and I'm ready to get my diet and exercise back on track. Fortunately, I haven't gained weight but I know I've lost muscle.

On average, how long does it take to get back in shape? I believe I once read that it takes 50% of the length of time that you spent not working out.

I was unable to workout for 3 months due to a broken foot, it only took me 3 weeks to get back to my old self. I really thought it was going to take a few months, I sure am glad I was wrong, Hope this helps, Karen
 
I think it all depends on how often you're weight training and how heavy you're lifting, in addition to clean eating and genetics. I've taken spurts off here and there for a variety of different lengths of time, and for me, it just depends on how often I'm doing it, and how much I'm putting into it. Everyone responds differently though.

Hello Nicole,

I think it depends on which exercises as well for me. I find it much harder to run if I take even a day off. Weight training puts no impact on your joints so it's not too difficult.
