How do you workout away from home?

This has probably been asked before in times past, but I wasn't browsing this forum back then so here goes. How do each of you workout when away from home on vacations, business trips, weekend getaways whatever? Do you find a local gym like a Golds and use it or do you bring some freeweights or other equipment with you, like those ever valuable Cathe tapes? ;-)

Some friends in Kentucky asked Logan and I to visit them for a few days. My friend's hubby and Logan are gonna tour a car museum, I think the Corvette museum one day while Sarah and I go shop in Nashville, drive back to their place in Bowling Green and then we'll go see a hot air balloon festival Friday night. Anyway, I should have Saturday morning free to get in a workout but am wondering what to take. Those dainty little 3 lb weights won't cut it for me, but I don't want to carry anything real heavy either. Maybe those elastic cords I've seen in some of the videos. Then again, she says they have a Golds there. I think I'd rather just workout in the room. What do you guys think?

Love,

Head to the gym

Maxy, if you have the option, head to the gym. Taking your friend with you might be a blast too..make a "spa day" out of it. You might even find their schedule listed online and find something new that you haven't tried before. Most gyms have one day passes for business people and travelers.

When I'm going to seminars for work, I usually look for a hotel gym just for the fun of trying new stuff or having the challenge to make up a routine with the equipment that they have. If you are going to stick it out at the house, or where you'll be staying, you could try those dyna bands. I have heard that people love them for quick workouts on the run. Another easy packing item is a jumprope. I've been know to tape the audio of some of my favorite videos and listen to that as I jump. You could easily do the same with a yoga tape and do the routine just from listening.

You could also do some power walking but I noticed you ladies will be shopping..and that's sort of included already;-). Have a great time.

When we go on vacation, I usually bring some hi/lo and kickboxing videos, a jumprope, running shoes and some light dumbbells (I bring Christi Taylor's Strength, Balance and Flexibility video). There's a gym close to our beach house that I go to and pay a small user fee and I love going there for some variety from my home workouts. The bands would be a great idea as well and would be so easy for you to pack.
Hope you have a great time!!

You could always go running or walking as well. Sometimes when I travel, I bring Christi's Strength, Balance and Flexibility, however, I do not always have access to a VCR. So I always bring my running shoes. For resistance, do as many pushups as you possibly can with good form, then take a rest and do 20 more. Then do a few triceps dips and some ab work. After the pushups, your abs will have really been pre-fatigued so the extra ab work will be a bonus.

As was mentioned, the gym rooms in hotels are good too and many of them have treadmills and stationary bikes as well as free weights.

If there is a will, there is a way.

Vacation? Most people would say let your body rest. But I understand where you're coming from. I always do something physical on vacation, but I do take a break from my normal routine. We usually cruise every year, we just got back. I refuse to take elevators and opt for the stairs instead. If anyone has been on a cruise ship, you know that's a lot of stairs. My legs ached after the first day, and I'm the queen of step around my house.

I live near Nashville. When you come here, be sure to visit Opry Mills Mall to shop. And if you like amusement/water parks, check out Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville. They have rides plus a wave pool and waterslides and a lazy river.

Max, who is Logan? My 16 yr old daughter is named Logan, so I am always keeping tabs on the popularity level of the name, and on whether the owner is male or female. When I go on vacation, I sometimes use the hotel gym, I usually plan in some strenuous hiking, cycling, skating, running or something depending on the location and season. If this is not possible, I do a tough series of pushups, situps, squats, lunges, calf raises and triceps dips with a chair. This hits most of the muscles. I really wear them out and it gets my heart beating also. I do this little routine, which takes about 30 minutes, every other day. This way at least I dont get too far "behind" while I'm gone.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-16-01 AT 04:53AM (Est)[p]I always get in a few walking days every week, so I plan my walks on the travel days. For weights, I either go to a local Y, or use Spri products tubing in the hotel room.

I did my own triceps routine on Friday in a motel room and did Tricep pushdowns, overhead pressouts and standing pressbacks with the Xertube. Then I did across the face kickbacks with ankle weights instead of dumbbells, and finished with chair dips and tricep pushups. I did my leg work at a Y and walked on their indoor track.

Thanks everybody for all your suggestions. I will do those pushups, situps, & triceps dips and try to find those Dyna-bands. I can probably find them @ Walmart, Target and maybe even GNC.

Although I said I will have some time Saturday morning, it may not be enough time to go to a gym there. I may have just enough time to do those exercises you suggested above and maybe go running a few blocks around their neighborhood.

Thanks Kim for your advice on what to see in Nashville. Sarah did mention Opry Mills and we'll probably go there. We will not have enough time to see that place in Louisville. maybe on another trip. That Saturday morning and early afternoon we'll stay close to their place, see some cave tour and go to a local orchard where she says they have great peaches. We're going to eat out a couple nights and one night at their house. Logan & Mike are going to that car museum, play some golf and we'll all try to be back in on time to go to that hot-air balloon festival both nights. They really love that and go see it every year since they're friends with one of the balloon competitors. Mike said there will be more special shape balloons than ever this year so it sounds like a fun time.

Mogambo, Logan is my boyfriend's name. Btw, I'm hoping and thinking the status of our relationship will change soon. Get this-one of my best friends said she ran into Logan a couple weeks ago at a jewelry store and she said he was standing right by the glass case where the engagement rings are! :-jumpy So maybe something special will happen this weekend. :-jumpy That wedding we went to a few months ago was wonderful so maybe it did get him to thinking. :) And those balloon festivals are romantic from what I've seen on TV. So maybe...
