How do you snap out of a funk?

Because I'm in one and I need to get out! I sprained this ankle a week and a half ago and not being able to do high impact Cathe stuff or running is really getting old. I've taken off the last few days and eaten really badly. Yes, I know better and I know I'm in a funk, but it's kind of like I just don't care. Now in reality, of course I care and when I feel that 5 or 10 pounds coming back I know I'll snap out. But I don't want it to get that far. So how do you snap out of it?

Are you able to walk any distance yet? Go to a park - somewhere pretty, and just enjoy. Do yoga or stretches. I find that a good relaxing stretch really improves my frame of mind when I feel down. As for eating... have fun, take a shopping trip to a health food store or organic foods store. Then just spoil yourself by buying some really cool, healthy stuff that you usually don't get.

I hope you feel better soon!

Here's some ideas:

1. Kick yourself in the rear and do anything that you can do for exercise. Anything is better than nothing;

2. Get our your healthy cook book and make a new recipe;

3. "Take five" before you eat something bad for you;

4. Put on a piece of clothing that ifts you great and that you love and remind yourself that you don't want to "grow out of it."

How do you snap out of a funk? Well, I would say that you need to change your thinking to stay positive ALL the time. Think of other things you can do and how you can progress in your fitness level while your ankle has time to heal. You don't have to buy anything. For me, that is just a temporary high that won't keep you out of a funk. JMHO. First of all, stop eating bad. Just eat healthy whether you feel like it or not and keep doing it. Everything else will soon follow. TRUST ME! I was in a funk for a long time.
NOW GET GOING!!!! DO SOMETHING POSITIVE EACH AND EVERYDAY!!!!!!

Hi Lorrie,

When I am in a funk, I do what ever is really fun to me. Ride my bike or take a walk with some good music (which usually turns into a run). Another thing I do is tell myself, I'll just work out for 5 or 10 minutes. I always end up going longer. Lately, I have been in an upper body slump (I love doing cardio). So, I've just been picking workouts or exercises that I really love.

Lorrie-
I usually just let it run its course until I'm bored with it and move on to another mood. I honestly don't think that humans were designed to be happy all the time. My "negative" emotions inspire as much as my positive ones. Some of my most creative ideas come out of funks! Don't worry, you'll move on long before your eating can do any real damage.

You just have to force yourself Lorrie. Be x( STERN x( and give yourself a good talkin' too! Hopefully you'll listen! ;)

I have been there...you just gotta do it! :)

Thank you, Nancy. I LOVE your reply.:) No use forcing happiness when none can be found.

Lorrie, when my knees gave out on me last year I couldn't do cardio or lower body work. I focused on upper body strength and endurance work instead, also core work. I took a lot of walks. I didn't focus much on the eating, just on what the rest of my body could do, especially my knees getting through that bad time. I travelled. I went home and brought some of my Cathes and continued with my UB and core work, and started putting in some of the modifications that my PT friend taught me for lower body. It took me about 5-6 months to get through that time and work my way back to my usual LB weights. And you know what? My weight was the same. The pounds balanced out in the end. Don't worry about things you can't control. Do something about the things you can.

Lorrie,

Pinky is absolutely right. I've been nursing a bad hip and have been unable to do much in the way of cardio or lower body strength. I felt miserable and put weight on and felt totally out of shape. Well, I took it slow--I started by walking and doing Leslie Sansone DVD's. I worked on upper body and stretching. Today, after 2 or3 months, I was finally able to do a step DVD all the way through. It really pays in spades to take your time and not to push too hard too soon. Hang in there and it will all come together for you as well. :)

I agree with Nancy completely, totally and absolutely!

As Nancy does, I let it run its course. Funks have their own shelf life and then you know when it's time to get your rear in gear again. And as Nancy says, I know I've reached that point when self pity and misery and feeling like s**t has become so totally dull and non-productive that I have to start exercising again to feel something different!

What helps also is starting with workouts just for fun and going easy on yourself, having realistic expectations about what you will be able to achieve when you start back.

The other thing that works for me is I start to panic about the state of my cardiovascular system and I worry about getting osteoporosis and so I grab the weights again quick!

Sitting with a cup of coffee viewing a Cathe DVD also helps: I get inot the music, I know all the moves and my body starts sitting on the couch as if it were actually doing the moves. So then I get up and do it because: what the hell am I waiting for?

Great reply Nancy. It's true we really need to the down to appreciate the happy.

I'm in a similar thing trying to come back and just don't care. I have no superficial motivation - don't really care how I look and that use to be such a motivator - as shallow as it way.

Good luck
