How do you know how many calories you burn?

Hey guys,
I was just in the Check-In Forum (I don't post there, just read sometimes) and noticed Fitnessfreak posted something about what she did this morning for workout, and then she said she burned 249 calories. How did she know that? I wanted to ask there, but didn't. I figured some of you here might know. Thanks for your help:)

A lot of heart rate monitors have a calorie count feature.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of the counter.

Yes, HRM. We cannot testify that they are dead on accurate, but it is the most accurate form of measurement we have available. It is definately more accurate than the "grips" on the various cardio machines...those are way off. A red flag is any device that does not ask for your height, weight, gender and age. Those are all factors in our calorie burn and HRM's use all that information, along with your heart rate.
 
Thanks everyone. This definatley helps. Just one more question (not like I haven't asked enough already:7) where can I get one of these HRM? Would it be like at a sports store like Sports Authority or Olympia or would I havta go to like a medical place or soemthing? Thanks for any MORE help;-)!!!

Hi Adri,
HRMs are becoming more and more readily available. You could find one at almost any sports store (even some stores that only have sporting sections like Walmart even), but you can probabably find the best price online. I know that Polar is one trusted brand that many on here use. But there are many other quality brands, just spend some time reading a few reviews and deciding exactly what you want your HRM to tell you about your workout:)

Thanks Mattea! I'll go with what you said. Check online first because the prices might be better. Wal-Mart was a good option, I didn't think of that (usually HATE going to Wal-Mart, boring for a teen}() but if its for me I'll make an exception;-). Thanks for your quick help!

I generally find that a good Cathe cardio workout burns about 40,000 calories! LOL! I did HC Extreme Hi Low Intervals this morning on an 8 inch step and I'm sure it was at least that many! :p

calorie counter.com, had an aerobic with weights training burning about 550 calories. I don't know how many I burn, though. I wish I could burn all my fat in one workout though, hmm, maybe not, I love getting new vhs/dvds :eek:
 
I always order from www.heartratemonitorsusa and have excellent service with awesome prices. Polar is an excellent name. Keep in mind, an accurate HRM requires you to wear a chest strap. It is an elastic strap that sits just under your breasts, hitting right where the sports bra hit. Some people can't stand it, others like myself get use to it quickly.

If you get one that requires no strap and you just put your finger on the wrist watch to get a reading, it won't be as accurate. The chest strap picks up every beat and you don't have to stop to take a reading.

Price varies depending on the bells and whistles.

D!ck's Sporting Goods carries HRM's, too.
 
I agree with using the chest strap version. I got a Polar ( mid price) for Christmas and now will not work out without it! If I forget to press the Start button and go through a workout, at the end I feel cheated if I don;t know how many calories I burned! I know it is an obsession! My husband thinks I'm nuts LOL!
 
Sarah, will the HRM that goes around the chest show through a tight top like I wear workout NIKE tanks and cami's so would it show through it? Like could you see the strap or bumbs through my shirt? Thanks for you help!
