Hollywood Hypocrites Grrrr...

Carole, I agree! Instead of giving concerts which really only helps them promote themselves, dig a little deeper and give some money. The company for whom I work has already given a million (and we're an insurance company!!) and is matching our Red Cross donations. You can bet I was on there as soon as they sent that email last week informing us.

By the way, where did you get the very cool flag with the eagle??? I love it!!!

Carol

Sparrow, excellent point.

Actually though, sometimes it's tougher when the Hollywood freaks try to help. DH told me Sean Penn (another temperate, modern legend in his own mind) decided he was going to help out, went to NO and rented a skiff or motorboat I guess with the idea he was going to pluck stranded people out of their homes. Apparently he rented a boat with a hole in it. 'nuff said. (BTW, I don't know if that story's true - DH told me and he exaggerates.)

The story about Sean Penn is true - I read it and saw a pic of him bailing the boat.

You guys are right about Star Jones. Her lavish wedding made me sick and just reading about her comments makes me happy that I never watch that show. I got sick of her starting every sentence with "When I was a prosecuter...." After the 20th time I wanted to say OK STAR WE GET IT....you were once a prosecutor!

Anyway....Star has nothing on Barbara Bush. The kindly former Mrs. President made some comments on NPR's Marketplace and said that since most of the people camped in the Astrodome were underpriveledged anyway, that the Astrodome was "really working out well for them" and she gave a little chuckle. I heard the story and was really sickened by her comments....then she returned to her million dollar mansion.

I haven't posted in a long time....but for once I had time to sit down and do it. Thanks for some intelligent adult conversation today girls!

I heard that same story about Sean Penn on the news. I did see him in a boat on the streets of NO so it is probably true. I agree about the concerts, just send money instead of always trying to be in the limelight.

Not only that, apparently, he had several people (assistants?) in the boat along with a photographer. People were wondering where the rescuees were going to fit.

The story I read about Sean Penn was that he got a boat and forgot to put the plug in. It promptly started taking on water, but the kicker was that the boat was so loaded with his personal entourage there was really no room to rescue anyone...part of the entourage was his personal photographer...Below is the excerpt from the article. http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=46143 Is the link to the whole article.

Meanwhile, actor Sean Penn made his own personal attempt to aid those in New Orleans, but the small boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

The 45-year-old Oscar winner had planned on rescuing stranded children, but an Agence France-Presse report indicates he apparently forgot to plug a hole in the vessel's bottom, which took on water within seconds of its launch.

Asked about his goal in the soaked city, Penn replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

But with the boat loaded with members of his entourage, including his personal photographer, one bystander taunted: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

I will add my thoughts on the Oprah shows. I did watch both of them today from my Tivo. While they made me cry, and made me sick all at the same time, I will have to say that I got a bit tired of Oprah herself saying over and over how "Americans need to apologise" "Americans owe these people".

Don't get me wrong, I have made my donations and if it were at all possible to physically help in any way I would. If only I lived closer. I am wracking my brain to figure out what can be 'done', but the truth is I can only do so much. I don't have a personal plane ala John Travolta, and can fly in supplies etc. I also recall reading about how much money Kelly Preston spent on Johnny's birthday bash that included all the top celebs.

I guess it angers me in a way to see them be so public about their high and mightiness. For goodness sake! It is the least they can do! You have the means so do it. But don't sit there and tell me that I owe an apology. I know everyone wants to blame somebody, or something, and there will be plenty of that going on for some time to come I'm certain.

To whom much is given, much is required. I have a feeling that proportionately there are people who have given much more of what they have then these celebrities are doing...while hogging the limelight and telling me I need to "apologise".

So what exactly are we Americans suppose to apologize for?????!!!!! WTF??? Did we cause the hurricane? Were we in CA, NV, NY, etc., somehow given the task to make evacuation plans, create a fund to get these people out, and somehow go in and rebuild the levees so that they wouldn't break in this situation? I'm so sick and tired of this being turned into something all Americans are required to apologize for. We're helping, for crying out loud, and giving what we can. I managed to listen to about 5 minutes of Oprah saying that we failed and should be embarrassed before I had to turn off the TV in disgust.

I don't see anyone blaming the rest of us when tornados hit Kansas or when Hurricanes hit Florida. Just because this turned out worse than expected doesn't mean suddenly we're all at fault. I believe some people could've done more to prevent this, but that lies in local govts, etc. I'm sorry, but from Elko-freakin' Nevada, on no income, I couldn't waltz in there the day of Katrina and personally carry out thousands of people and put them up in homes. Oh wait - I should've done that 2 days BEFORE the hurricane. I guess I'm just less-than because I don't have a camera-crew.

I lost all respect for Oprah when she went on her tirade against - was it Hermes? In Paris? - because she wanted them to reopen fifteen minutes after they'd closed, just so she could get in and look at some shoes or purses or whatever. She portrays herself as "just folks" and then acts like the spoiled celebrity she is when they refuse to gave to her celebrity.

Also infuriated me that she played the "race" card in that situation too. Her! The wealthiest woman in America! Give me a break.

OK. Too early. I need coffee.

I completely agree with you Sparrow. I was watching tv last night and saw how several stars (Julia Roberts, John Travolta to name 2) came in to help the Katrina victims. They brought money and food and supplies and worked in the shelters and sat and talked to the victims. Is Star going to do that??? If she does it then she can complain...if not, she needs to shut up!

I sent one as well. Ignorant comments such as hers (and other celebreties a la Tom Cruise) may be pushing me over the edge. It may have been a little strong, but here it is:

Just a note from a self-involved, unaware, Average American, to let you know how insulted I am by your careless comments on yesterday's show.

If you had any idea what we in Average America have been doing to support the Gulf Coast Victims, you would not have been so blase w/your uninformed commentary.

Come out to little My Town, AR, population 1,000. See the piles of non-perishables being collected. Visit the homes of those hosting misplaced families. Stop by the schools that have enrolled the misplaced children. You could even come to my office, where as a self-employed Average American, I am managing my business. In that business where I am donating 25% of my gross sales, that is my entire profit for the month of September, to the Red Cross.

That, Miss Jones, is just a fraction of what the millions of Average Americans in this great country are doing for their fellow Average Americans.

So, feel free to stop on by, we'd love to give you the tour. We'd also be happy to accept your check. Perhaps you may want to match what you spent on your wedding?

Respectfully,
Your Average American

Great letter!

Starr Jones lost any hope of having me as a fan or getting my respect when she mooched off of everyone for her wedding, promoted it when she was a red-carpet interviewer for the Oscars (or the Emmys?) and wore fur.

Actually, some people who give concerts bring in a lot of money AND contribute not only their time, but money as well.

I agree with you Sparrow - I've had it with Oprah and her "when I talk people listen" attitude. She "gives" away this and that? Nonsense - sponsors do that, it's surely not coming out of her pocket. It she is so involved in these peoples interests and those of folks in Africa, as she constantly advertises, why is she always DRIPPING in diamonds? She seems to be conveniently forgetting about the thousands of children enslaved and mutilated (chopped off arms -literally) in Sierra Leone who farm those things. I'm just tired of her self-importance and constant self-promotion. She and Star should hang out together.
