hiatal hernia?

I had an endoscopy today and this is what they found. The surgeon said it was small and wasn't going to need any treatment. He also said I could keep lifting weights. But what do they do with it then? I don't know if the "acid" feeling I was having before the Nexium is related and I'll ask at my follow up appt next week, but if possible, I don't want to keep taking Nexium. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Hey Kim,

I have a hiatal hernia and GERD. I take prevacid for my GERD. My Dr. recommened that I don't lift weights or do a lot of ab work, but he said that I could keep doing both as long as my hernia wasn't bothering me. It does bother me at times, but mostly it's the GERD that gives me problems.

Well he didn't say anything to me about GERD. I need to ask about that when I go for my follow up. How can you tell if the hernia is acting up? Did your dr say what the chances were that it would get bigger?

After I eat, sometimes it feels like the food is sitting right on my stomach. You should be able to feel a big buldge.

The last time I had a scope done, he did say that it had gotten bigger, but it was nothing that had him worried at the time. He likes to do a scope every 5 years (unless I'm having problems) then he'll check it more often. The only thing that they can for a hernia (that I'm aware of) is surgery. Which, my Dr. says he doesn't want to put me through that. I guess it's not a easy surgery to have.

EDTA: There is a chance that it can get bigger.

Well great. I've never noticed a bulge. I read that weight loss and some other diet changes could help with any associated reflux/heartburn though.
