Hiatal Hernia and weight training

Just hoping for some help with a weight training question for all of you out there. I have been having stomach problems, GERD for months now, with no relief even with major diet changes, Prevacid, apple cider vinegar, etc. I went to the Dr over a terrible cold, only to find out that I have a sliding hiatal hernia and that is what my problem is. That is the good news, the bad news is that I probably caused it myself, due to weight training. This all started back in March when I started doing heavy weights and using the barbell. anyhow, the Dr. said to stop lifting heavy weights, but gave me no options on how to modify, etc. Anyone out there that can help? I suspect that the sqats and legs work are to blame. I just hate that this happened because I have seen such great changes in my shape since I started the heavy weights and would hate to lose it all. It took so long to break my cardio addiction, and now this;(

I've had a hiatal hernia and still have acid reflux (GERD) and take Nexium daily. I'm no doctor but I don't agree that weight training causes hiatal herinas at least not for me. FOOD caused reflux that led to my hiatal hernia because I did not take care of the reflux when I first started experiencing it. I let it go so long that the acid caused damage to my esphogas (sp?) hence the hernia. I think you should do some research before excepting the drs diagnosis. And get another dr's opinion. Was your dr a gastroenternoligist? IF not you need to see a gastro, they specialize in GERD, reflux and hiatal herania's.

Wow, I never heard of weight training causing that! I looked it up though and it does say that heavy lifting can be one of the causes. Interesting...

Hello,

What is a 'hiatal hernia' and what are the symptoms? I have never heard of this. From which web site did you read about this information?

TIA

Yen - it has to do with your stomach. I'll let you google it for the specifics, but it usually causes chest pain and acid reflux (basically acid escaping from your stomach into your throat). Both my dad and I have this problem. My dad's was so bad at one point, he thought he was having a heart attack and went to the emergency room. If anyone has ever seen "War of the Roses", my dad and I practically die laughing over the scene where Michael Douglas does the same thing. Anyways, most people go on a medication that blocks the production of acid to a degree in the stomach. I have been on Prevacid from time to time, but there are other medications such as Nexium and over the counters - Tagament, Zantac, Pepcid AC, etc... I'm actually having issues with this right now - feels like someone shoved a sock down my throat. Something in there swells a little and my Dr. said that can happen. I always know when it is about to act up because I feel like I swallowed something that got stuck. Luckily for me, that seems to keep the acid from coming up and giving me issues. Sorry for the longwinded answer!

I have to agree with Connie. I have a Hiatal Hernai and GERD. My Dr. never said anything about not lifting weights. You can always go to a Gasrointestinal Dr. That way you can be sure if you have a Hiatal Hernia. The only true way that I know of to tell for sure is have a test done. It's where they go down your throat with a scope. They give you drugs during this test so that you don't "feel" the scope going down into your stomach.
